My centre difflock is intermittant.

Starts working if you go through water sometimes.....

i know the FSM has a gazillion checks I could do, but I suspect its a common fault- anyone had a similar issue?

The real question is is it actually working, or is the light just intermittent? The above is for a bad switch. If its actually not engaging, the first think I would do is put fresh oil in it, and work on it regularly.

I just bought an LX, and the center dif lock was slow to lock, and needed me to back up to unlock. After putting new synthetic gear oil in there and driving around for a while, its gotten to the point where it works like butter.

It could be the actuator, but if you haven't been using it, it most likely just needs to be exercised with clean oil.

Had an issue with mine a few years back where it wouldn't unlock and would get stuck. Did a ton of research on here and it's definitely not a common issue.

Might be worth taking it out and giving it a cleaning as it appears that's what the issue with mine was.

Super easy to do (if you have small hands).

butter: please point to reference on how to lube. tnx

Change the transfer case oil. Use a high quality 75W90 synthetic. I’ve used Mobil 1 and Valvoline. I also add AT-205 to extend the life of the seals.
