Any advice on dealing with no smog pump

Hi all,

My wife and I are on the road traveling through Latin America currently in El Salvador in a 1984 FJ60 we like to call Ola. The smog pump seized back in Belize about 2 months ago. Since I wasn't able to find a replacement I rigged a new belt dirrectly from the crank shaft to the water pump and the truck has been running like that ever since. Only problem is that it doesn't fit correctly and it squeels a lot at about 2 - 2.5 K RPM's.

Does anyone have any advice on one, what kind of damage can happen to the engine if it goes much longer like this and two, what alternatives are there if I don't end up finding another smog pump?

If anyone is interested in details about the trip so far feel free to check out our site:

Thanks,

JP

I dont run a smog pump at all, cap off the air rail and youll be fine.

If you saved the air pump you may be able to "gut" it and use it as an idler/tesnsioner pulley.

Wow, thanks for the quick replies. I guess I'll keep it like this until I can either find a new pulley, or smog pump or get someone to help me remove all the emissions stuff.

Do you think this may effect us worse once we get down to the high altitudes of the Andes?

I dont think so, it just recycles exhaust gases to be re-burnt.

Sounds like a great trip, checked out the site, where are the pics fo the cruiser.....

on the 2f it has a pipe off of the exhaust to the smog pump there budddy ;)

yeah...

but I was under the impression that the exhaust pipe leading up to the smog pump pulled exhaust gases up it.....???

Sorry for the crappy shot but here it is. Its the only one I have, But I colored it red with ye old paint brush. It goes up and hooks in the smog pump system with some hoses and check valves.

Im sure someone like say 60wag will post up and school us all with his cruiser knowledge on smog stuff.

Looks like the smog pump still gets its feed from the air filter like mine, is that red marked pipe the flexable steel pipe like on the 3FE?

nope, its routed exhaust...im gonna see if i can dig up a diagram and get to the bottom of this...

well it looks like from this slightly confusing manual photo that...the exhaust feeds the ABV then it goes into a Relief valve and then goes into the air cleaner and then back to the smog pump....if you got the Haynes manual for 1980thru 96 its in there.
