The wife's 1997 Lexus, the antenae motor runs, but the antenae stays up...? Is this a fixable problem? Since the antenae motor is running, is it a simple connection job? Anybody have experience with this?
The '97s have a plastic gear inside the mast. The gear is wound around a spool controlled by the antenna motor. The motor is in the right front fender and accessible through a hole in the engine bay. This is a very common issue with these breaking and many of us have posted how to do the repair yourself. You can buy the mast w/plastic gear from C-Dan. You do NOT need the complete antenna assembly which is what many dealers will tell you.
You can also do the repair without removing the antenna cable though getting some slack out of the cable will help you do the work on the fender. I would use keywords="Mast plastic" and do an advanced search limited to the 80 section.
Emmett,
No problem. A few years ago a search was trivial. We now have so many posts (that's a good thing) that we get too much information returned and it sometimes takes an old hand to help with searching. Always feel free to ask for some keywords if there is something you can't find.
