I knew the windshield did not look like the previous installer took pride in his/her work, but sheesh.

Safelite comes out today and tells me they will not do the job, due to liability (we all know about the leaking down into the computer issues), he said the last one they did cost them $7K in dual computer replacement.

The issue: prior installer did not bother with the Rivit kit and used screws for the holes. This enlarges the holes and the new Rivit kit will not seal.

Only solution per Safelite: Body shop to fill the holes and re-drill per FSM specs. Then the Rivit kit can be re-introduced to my cruiser.

The Curse of the Black Pearl Continues... will post up results.:meh:

I don't see an issue with the use of the screws to hold the side trim... of course it wouldn't hurt to put a smear of sealant on the screw threads themselves. But once screws have been used, the factory rivet size will no longer work for that particular hole.

I'd take the rig to another glass shop... get a 2nd opinion.

Keep us posted.

Just had Safelite do mine, the guy that did it is a Cruiser head and they have him do all the work on Cruisers just because of the leakage issues. Anyway, he mentioned specifically that he has to use screws to put the trim back on because of the rivets. Kind of an odd Toyota design on something that's definitely going to get replaced at some point.

SupraTRD - how did your quest to replace a windshield with StateFarm end up? By now I guess this is year old news but I'm still interested. I update my ins. to give me better coverage including windshields. $100 deductable on it but I'm afraid they'll only cover some cheap partnered glass shop that's going to screw up the job.

Hey Darin,

Initially State Farm was only willing to pay for the cheap Chinese glass... until I mentioned to them that the aftermarket glass doesn't fit/seal correctly. Moments later the rep said they'll pay for a new OEM windshield with all new trim because the aftermarket glass in Bronze was on their "defective list".

Once they agreed to pay for factory glass, the next ordeal was finding someone in the area that was familiar with the 100 series. I called up a buddy that works at a shop that deals with restorations and hot rods. When I contacted their recommended glass shop, the shop turned me down because they didn't want to take on the liability of the pricey OEM glass, stating that my insurance company only pays them a ridiculously low flat rate for labor, and should they damage the glass or have to deal with a problem such as a leak or wind noise, it just wouldn't be worth it to them. Understandable.

So then I was referred to another glass guy by another friend in the auto biz. The owner of the glass shop was cool, and was familiar with the 100 series. He knew of the rivets so that was reassuring. Only problem with this guy was that he had an excuse for EVERYTHING. He was supposed to order everything from Toyota... I called his ass a week later to see if the parts came in, only to find out he never even ordered the parts. He said he would order everything right then. Ok... no biggie right? A week elapsed, only to find out he didn't get the s*** because it was supposedly out of stock in the US. I called up my friend at the toyota dealer to verify, there were 7 available in the country.
At this point, I basically said screw it.

I am still living with the cracked windshield, but oh well. I'll eventually find a good glass guy to take care of it... but for now, I'm going to keep on trucking' with the busted glass. It doesn't leak or obstruct my vision.

I Can't go back to the previous installer (PO: Reno, Nevada "Pro Autoglass")

I am going to try a local Autobody shop w/ Glass company combo, well see what they say. The Screw is double that of the skinny rivet, so no going back to Rivet at this point, unless all holes are filled.

What I don't get, is why they can screw into the roof for the rack and use silicone with large screws, but not the windshiled? Safelite installer left a Rivet my dash pocket, it has a plastic cover on it - I still think a healthy dose of Silicon would seal it. I have owned it for 4+ years without a leak.

FYI, if anyone is curious about your current situation, you can pull the small plastic cover up from the bottom of the Side of the windshield and see if there are rivets or screws.

I had the same Issue. I ordered inner and outer trim and rivets from c-Dan. A1 Autoglass came out and the installer ended-up going to Lowes to get bigger rivets as the holes were too big for OEM.

Ditto Safelite did mine yesterday and used screws. The last place didn't use anything except window caulk, no screws or rivets

Well I think Gerber glass did a fine job. The Installer has 20 years experience? He did not mention the screws but did re-use them. I know one thing for sure, all the trim looks like it is where it's suppose to be, in like the previous job.
Only time will tell on leaks. Will post up on wind and water once field tested

When I eventually get around to getting my windshield replaced, I'm going to pull up the carpet and flood the area around the windshield with water to ensure there are no leaks.

I don't want to find out there's a leak after mold/mildew takes over.
