I have read all the threads on oil in regards to the 80 series. Has anyone used that Royal Purple synthetic oil. Seems like its advertised quite a bit in Hot Rod mags. It a bit more expensive than Mobile 1 but I can get it for pennies more that Mobile....Your thoughts? :cheers:

Mobil 1 is tried an true, why bother?

Related question: Any suggestions on Mobil 1 viscosity for an engine with 67K in Sacramento (Summer days between 90 and 110 consistently) ?

Thanks,
Tony

Sacto,

Use the recommended 10W-30.

Yep, in the following order:

1) Mobil 1 0w-40
2) Mobil 1 SUV 5w-40
3) for mineral oil, Chevron 15w-40 in temps above 40f.

Look on Bobistheoilguy.com. Mixed reviews, some good UOAs some so-so, lingering concerns about thinning out of grade. I would stick with Mobil 1 for the money.

Sacto,

Use the recommended 10W-30.

Why?!!!! This engine loves 40 weight oils and 0w-40 & 5w-40 provides a 4 season oil for all climates.

I'm in Sacramento as well. My 80 uses Mobil 1 15w-50. I'm not reccomending it, just stating a fact and it seems to be fine for me. I have also used Delvac 1. Those 110 degree days blasting down the central valley seems too hot for the reccomended 5w-30. The best oil out there for the $ is the Chevron Delo 15w-40 which I run in my 60. A case of 6 gallons retails for $35 at Costco. I run my 40 on whatever I can get cheap-usually Chevron Supreme 20w-50 which I can get at Kragen for $0.69 per quart.

The place I seem to spend $$ is gear oil! Last year I went through two 5 gallon buckets of Chevron Delo Gear which is $60 per 5 gallons. Great stuff though.

For higher ambient temperature, it's reasonable to go up for the 40 weight, at your own preference - but I've never questioned the factory recommended oil weight. I'd been running on M1 5w-30 since I bought the truck at 35Kmiles with no issues with Truckee's winter nights or Las Vegas's summer days. Currently switched to M1 SUV 5w40 and found no difference between the two beside the higher oil pressure read on the gauge.

Andrew,

Heard you mentioned about the Chevron gear oil but I haven't found any local source yet. Where do you get yours at ?

Regards,
Frank.

I buy it at the local Chevron distributer "Hunt and sons" which is about 2 miles from my house. I can ask tham about a pallet of 5 gallon buckets if we could find enough guys locally who might want a 5 gallon bucket. They do have a 16 gallon size-but it's pretty big and looks like a skinny oil drum. I don't know how to pump the oil out of it.

I e-mailed Shell about hot weather and 5w40 syn oil, this is what they said.

"Thanks for the opportunity to respond to your inquiry, and thanks for using Shell Lubricants.

ROTELLA T Synthetic would be a better product to use in very hot operating conditions. Synthetic's base stocks have better resistance to high temperature oxidation and decomposition. This can mean fewer deposits, less wear, and less oil thickening. The SAE 40 portion of 5W-40 assures that viscosity is correct at high temperatures."

Jonathan Ferguson posted the Australian oil specs for the 1FZ, it is interesting to note the different recommendation Toyota gives where US CAFE rules are not in effect,

Engine
Petrol(1FZ-FE)
20W/50 -7 -> 38
15W/40 -12.5 -> 38
10W/30 -18 -> 38
5W/30 -29 -> 10

there 5w30 is only to be used below 10c or 50f, on that chart 15w40 would cover me in GA year round I have never seen below 10F (-12.2c), in the summer I could use a 50wt.

I am currently trying out Mobil Delvac 1 5w40 (AKA Mobil 1 truck & suv)

To rehash this discussion from a long time ago (since the search engine seem to not work very well), it is pretty well agreed that the requirement for 5w-30 in the LC in the US is being driven by nothing more than CAFE fuel economy requirements. When you look at the Austrailian specs that RavenTai posted you notice the different requirements. Being that the Austrailians don't have CAFE, it is generally accepted that their recommendations are better to follow in the interest of engine life.

OK so I'll go with the tried and true M1 viscocity TBD per availability. Thanks for the input.
