I love the lid design. I think you could get away with paint if you want to, looks pretty nice. Especially if you used a light, semi to flat gloss paint.

thanks. maybe i'll give paint a shot anyway. i can always go back and line it if it looks bad enough to motivate me.

Hey Missiboy, as far as the tongue is concerned you can without weakening the structiure cut the leading edge off and weld in a 2 inch receiver as long as necessary, they are available from places like Northern tool.com, McMaster Carr, com, weld it as you did the rear receiver and use the lunette as well as a 2 inch ball or even a lok and roll system..You gain access to the rear of the vehicle as well as articulation above the shorter tongue. Good luck ad have fun with it.

thanks for the advice, rubicon. looking back on it, i wish i done just that when i extended the tongue. i'm actually still thinking about going back and adding the front receiver hitch-depends on how much energy i have left after the top is finished. at least when the top and paint are done comes the fun stuff.....accessories.

getting close to finishing the lid. i've got to put a support brace across the center and then on to struts, hinges, latches and paint.

Its funny your top looks like those square aluminum flat bottom boats, might be a cool idea to have a trailer top the doubles as a dingy

yeah, i'm hoping when i get the fenders, rtt and paint done it won't look so bulky. i'm just glad i didn't make it any taller than i did.

as of right now, i'm leaving them stock and attaching rubber fender flares to them. if those don't last, or if the tires are too close to the frame and they ball up with mud, i will put on some spacers and build wider fenders.

the more i look at that lid the more i wish i had built it where the edges of the top matched up with the edge of the tub, so it wouldn't have that aluminum boat look that lx450landcruiser so graciously pointed out:D

With uniform paint or two tone, neither will make it look too big or boat like. I think you nailed the looks on this thing. Add a sticker if you need to break up the profile a bit.

when you gonna finish this thing?

don't want my other projects to get jealous.

hinges are done on the lid and i got my shock supports mounted. one of them doesn't go all the way onto the ball mount, so i may have to order another. didn't really have a chance to work on the mount today-or take any pictures for that matter. will get some up tomorrow.

having trouble getting a rtt. the guy in little rock i've been talking to (overland trailers) had some of the new car-top-tents(larger model) coming in but they were damaged in the container. i'm looking for one of the larger models if anybody has one they want to get rid of. i may just bite the bullet and get the arb. everything about it is appealing to me but the price.

first pic is my handle-nice and stout, but as it turns out, kind of hard to reach when the lid is all the way open.

second pic is my hinges. 3 inch channel with bushings welded on the ends and then welded to the top. on the tub are pieces of flat stock with the same bushings welded to them and bolts for pins. on the inside is another piece of flat stock running all the way across to keep the tub hinges in place.

third pick is my 250lb(per strut) gas struts.

last pic shows how high the lid opens. a little more than i was expecting, but it will be nice once i get all my crap in there. i did finally bite the bullet and order an arb simpson II rtt. i found out that the 4wheelparts just across the stateline was running a special. i got $125 off the sticker price and then talked them into drop shipping it to me so i wouldn't have to pay any taxes on it. should be here by the end of next week.

and yes, this build is so slow my top has had time to rust.

well, i finally got to pull the trailer behind my 40 on a short but much needed overnight camping trip this past weekend with battle and ram. before heading out i sprayed a coat of primer on it to hedge against any rust that may develope from the mud i would be slinging onto it. pulling it to the woods at highway speeds was a pleasant surprise. the raised lid was a definite bonus when loading all the gear inside. the only problems were a noisy military hitch after loading the backend down with firewood, the struts ended up being too long and raises the lid well out of tippy toe reach and i need some kind of mud deflector (maybe flaps on the 40) to keep all the goo off of my expensive rtt. my camera died right after we left so i don't have any good pics. i saw battle with his camera out, so maybe he'll post some up.

here's a couple in the shopyard before heading out.
