I am learning and enjoying your thread. Thanks for the pics and info. Nice work......!!!

i've cut the tailgate, but having trouble coming up with a good method to seal it. i left two inches on the sides and about 1 inch of lip on the bottom. anybody have pics of what they've done? i can't find any.

finished the tailgate and the rear hitch. tailgate took up way too much of my time and i still think i may rig a handle so i can open and close it one-handed. gonna try and get it lined and painted first. the lid is gonna have to wait till i can find some angle iron and sheet metal. pics...........

tailgate cables came from the same dodge i got the bed from. the tailgate has two compression springs in the middle with two pieces of 3/4 inch bar stock and threaded in 3/8 bar for handles. the hinges are stanley's that i got from lowe's.

i don't know if you can tell from the pics, but there is about a half inch lip all the way around the inside where weather-stripping will go to create a good water/dust tight fit.

up next......
rhino line
paint
lid

That's a great locking handle.

Have you tried heading to an RV camper store, or grabbed a catalog? It seems that those places would have some sort of rubber gaskets to seal body parts. Trailers/campers do tend to have moving parts (e.g. doors, extensions, etc.) that need sealing. Perhaps you can find something there for your tailgate and pending lid.

Keep up the great work.

Very nice! Where are the "handles located? on the tailgate a bit inboard?

Looks great bud.

been wrestling with the lid for a while. i wanted to have a raised lid for the added room, but it's been a royal pita. we've got a press break in the shop, but it's only 48 inches wide, so i bent two pieces of 16g sheet metal with a bit of an angle on the sides. it was difficult to match them perfectly, so i think my plans have changed from painting the top to rhino lining it to cover up the imperfections. once i weld the end pieces on i'll know if it needs any support bracing. probably will. sheet metal is welded to a 1 1/2 x 1/8 inch angle iron frame, and it will be supported by a couple of hydraulic struts. hinges will be on the front of the trailer and there will be some sort of locking latch on the back.

I love the lid design. I think you could get away with paint if you want to, looks pretty nice. Especially if you used a light, semi to flat gloss paint.

Nice man!
