My wifes truck is ten years old and may never have been waxed, it looked pretty dull.

So yesterday I scared the crap out of my wife, I wet sanded the truck with 2000 grit and it came out real dull almost like a dusty gray.

Then came the buffer with foam pad and 3M compound for dark colours(45.00$), it looked great but had swirls in the finish. Next came the yellow wax and it looks as good as new short of the scratchs and dings and no more swirls.

6 Hrs later and the truck looks much much better.............

Mine's scheduled for its first ever exterior detail Tuesday. Clay, polish, wax, etc. I'm pumped as the paint is still in fine shape and glossy but it's got that dry feel from zero wax over an 11 year period.

Good to hear Radd, just because one uses their Cruiser to run over trees, et al, doesn't mean it can't also look good on the street!

What type of buttmunch would run over trees? Out this way we try to Tread Lightly! Maybe you could read up on that.

Not sure I'd have the balls to attack mine with sandpaper. Glad to hear it turned out OK.

Griot's products are good. Used it on the LC, clayed, polished and waxed it right after we got it 3mos ago and it looked 100% better. Really satisfied with the products. Used it in all our cars.

Seems the swirls are still visible and I may use a swirl remover on the buffer then re apply wax.

And do not be afraid to use 2000 grit wet, you are more likly to burn through on a corner or fuel door edge with an agressive machine past on a buffer.

Thanks Tom, yes my wife will not be running here 80 through the bush any time soon and the PO never did either. I guess thats why both lockers do not work.

This poor 80 is doomed for the shopping plaza where nasty door dings from other preditors and stray shopping buggies.

These are on a black 03 4Runner that I clayed, polished and waxed last year using Griot's. The paint had been butchered by someone who didn't know what they were doing at a local shop. The first pic is a BEFORE and the second is an AFTER....night and day difference and no more swirl marks!

Thats exactly what my paint looked like before and after.

Very cool to wet sand the orange peel out and buff to a nice mirror like finish.

wow, that is nice. My paint looks like the above pic also, except it's the best color every painted on a land cruiser- green! :)

It is amazing what a PC orbital and the right car care products will do to damaged paint. I've done (3) rigs since that one and all were referrals from the first guy. It made that 4Runner look better than the ones on the dealer's lot.

The best color is BLACK!!!! :D

it showed the guy on Trucks the t.v. show talking about detailing. He did the wet sanding thing. It looked nice, but as long as it took him on 1 square foot of a truck hood it would take me a friggin week to do the whole cruiser.

After

could you show a picture after all the "stuff" has worn off?

I don't have any "after the stuff has worn off" pics as it isn't my rig, but the polish step removed the swirl marks, as it takes micronometers of the paint off to make it smooth. You use the type of polish depending on how bad your paint is to get it looking smooth and clear again. The polish doesn't cover them up, it removes them, so all you are talking about it rewaxing once a year or so, unless you add more swirls marks.

I did my own rig over a year ago and it still beads water and only has custom pinstriping now, but no swirl marks! :D

Also helps to NEVER wash, wax, etc. in a circular motion.

I just went with a basic wax-job a couple of weekends ago... and she's looking really nice Clark. Most improved award went to the metal strips around the windows. They had a sun-bleached grayish hew to them. Now black and shiny. We be pimp'n!
