Another Broken Key Shell

Why would anyone do that? If someone is that worried about breaking a remote key, why not just buy a non-remote master key, problem solved. I may be out of the norm, but both of my keys that are 15 years old are intact. And when one breaks, it's like $70 bucks to have the dealer cut me a new one. All this key case business seems like overkill.

The main benefit I can see is you can just have your local hardware store cut you a new key for like $2 and not worry about losing it or anything cause you can just get a new one cut for super cheap.

another broken key

Just picked up a couple of these on FleaBay. First thing I notice is that they re-positioned the way the core sits, moving the chip closer to the ignition. It seems to be fairly well made but be careful on the winding of the spring. Mine went bouncing as I opened the case. I haven't had it cut yet, but it looks promising. :)

I'll update once I get the thing cut.

OK, so looks can be deceiving. Even though it appears that it will work, it does not. It will if I hold another remote unit up next to the ignition's key slot but not by itself.

Apparently the chip is far enough away that it will not register. Engine cranks but will not fire. :(

I will tinker with it some but don't buy these just yet.

I have one similar to that, and thought the same thing. If you open it up, I bet you'll find a slot right by the front of it where the chip can be inserted. The chip must be removed from the remote housing and installed in the new key housing. Hope that helps. I was about to order 2 of that style from ebay. Do you know the seller you ordered from?

Yes, I ordered from esongbon. I don't want to crap on him or her and their reputation. The product was as described and was delivered in a very quick manner. However the reality is that it doesn't work on my 2005 100 series.

I will check into it further in the next few days to see if I can come up with a reasonable solution.

*For those that say "just buy another key shell and be done with it", I say, "buy a 40 and live with all the wonderfulness of that design. Including the hot foot, tapping valves, QP rust, dizzy, lack of PS, tank range, rocker rust, terrible hatch struts, no A/C, -1.5x candle power headlights, steering slop, and natural lean."

Believe me, the list goes on and on but to have a quality truck you're going to have things that make you want it perfect to suit your needs. The 40 is one of my favorite vehicles of all time but it could use some functional characteristics upgraded. This is another example of trying to accomplish just that, except with a 100.

Here's how I figured out how to make my first key work: http://www.fjcruiserforums.com/forums/tech-articles-staging-area/155870-switchblade-flip-key-fj.html

I'm guessing the flip fob you bought @UltraFJ has the same type of slot. I'd be looking for something like that. If you post a pic maybe we can identify it? I know it's a pain dealing with that little spring...

Thank you for the link. I did exactly as the OP posted and I'm happy to say that I now have a fully functional flip key for my wife to break.

Here are a few pics of the process. I didn't have a slot so I used double sided tape and placed the transmitter where the star is.

Thanks again, I'm anxious to see when the flip key gets broken.

Oh, FWIW I went to a big box hardware store to have my flip keys cut. I also brought along a couple of blanks that I ordered in case the flip key didn't work. (4 keys in all).

The guy running the key machine said he wouldn't cut them because they didn't sell them and he didn't want to risk screwing them up.

I persuaded him to just "cut the damned things" since they were only a couple of bucks each. He did and didn't write me up a ticket to take to the register. He said since they don't sell them, he just cut them for free.

"Good luck and have a nice afternoon".

Haha interesting. I'm really glad moving the transmitter worked for you, that's awesome. I'm a bit sad to see that this design, which looks nicer than mine, had the slot for the transmitter overlooked. But hey, if some double sided tape works, I'm down with that. I also had an issue getting mine cut. No big box stores would touch it for the same reason. I finally found a locksmith who did it with no problem in like 5 minutes... I'll just go straight there this time...

I have to say, I emailed the seller esongbon on eBay to inform them about the transmitter being too far away for a simple plug and play on our 100 series trucks. I have rec'd no less than 6 emails communicating that they wished to replace or refund my money. I told them that I had already had it cut and they still offered a refund.

In the end, I explained that I had a working key and didn't need or want a refund. So, I have to give a big kudos to them for making repeated attempts to make it right.

Wow, that's awesome to hear, I'll order from then when I get mine too. Thanks for posting that. So does that mean that you got a weird one or are all of their key shells lacking the slot for the transmitter?

That's funny, mine works in that orientation in my '04. What year are you having a problem with the immobilizer not sensing the key?

It's a 2005.

Really strange that mine works without having to disassemble the guts to move the transponder. What would make some immobilizers have a smaller reception field?
