I just had the blown front diff symptoms last night after 201K trouble free miles on my '98 100 Series.
Symptoms: hesitation / missing over the last week when I would accelerate hard, last night backed it down the drive 15 feet, gave the wheels their twice a year cleaning, started the truck up and heard an awful whining / grinding when I went into R/D/2/L, P would not hold the truck, and of course no go. Hit the CDL button and the noise was gone, truck worked fine in P/R/D/2/L.
I have had it since new and most of the 201K miles have been on road. Looking back, the "missing" was probably missing teeth!
BTW, last time I clean the wheels if this is going to happen....

Thanks to the several (more like 7) threads on this issue, I just completed the conversion from 4WD to 2WD. This will let me use my primary driver until I can get it fixed.

My two options for repair in North Atlanta will not be able to look at it until next Monday with the Thanksgiving holiday. I do not have the time to tear into the diff with my schedule. If anyone has additional trusted shops in the Atlanta area, please let me know.

What else should I have looked at /replaced while it is torn apart (at 201K miles). I figured U-joints should all be replaced on both prop shafts along with fluid changes (trans, diffs).

NOTE: I cut the bottom 2 1/4" from two Penn tennis ball "cans" (plastic) and used them as protective cups for the hub bearings. They fit perfectly (tight) inside the hub. The center cap will hold them so they do not work their way out.

Sorry to here that, the only shop I can recommend is ACC. My truck will be there next week getting new boots.... and after the new year will be the ARB locker up front for just this reason.

Thanks Yeti! I will give them a call. Of course this could not have happened when my oldest is home for winter break... This is my daily driver, my "spare car" is a '67 TR4A that of course does not run...

wow....my dad had a TR4A full restored....white and black california top.....american racing wheels...pirelli tires....original wood knobs and dash dials....sweet car.

You know, you can totally drive the vehicle in the condition it is in and have ACC look at it when it is more convenient for you. I drove mine around with a disconnected front drive shaft for like a month with zero harm done.

I have had this one for 25 years. British Racing Green, wires. I rebuilt the engine from bare block years ago. Has been sitting gathering dust for way too many years. Right now I need to pull the clutch master and slave cylinders and ship them off to be bored and sleeved. Probably should do the brake master also at the same time. Have been looking at Apple Hydraulics (NY I think) to do that work. New tires and tubes also. Goal is to have that one up and running for spring.

pfran,

I think I saw that on one of the posts while researching the "2WD field conversion". I forgot to disconnect the CDL switch lead on the actuator motor. It looks like it is on top of the transfer case. Is it easy to get to or should I pull the dash switch and disconnect there?

You don't have to disconnect it there. I would just pop the front bezel off of the center console and unplug the CDL switch. This is just a safety measure to ensure that you or a passenger does not accidentally disengage it. FWIW, I left my CDL completely plugged up the entire time I had my front drive shaft laying in the rear cargo area.

Something's not adding up - you converted to 2wd, so do you have the front hubs unlocked and it's grinding? Or are the hubs locked and with the center diff locked it's binding? Sounds more like something is wrong with the conversion than the diff.

Take it to ACC. Don't take it to Sandy Springs Toyota if you have thought about it. I could write a book about the bull**** they have pulled with me. They are scum of the earth at that place. Never again will I step foot in that place, piss poor service. They make me sick

Trunk, The 2WD conversion was after the front diff issues. Just did that today. Have to get the front diff fixed but it is my daily driver and just before Turkey day, no one would be able to work on it. Back to 4WD after the front diff is fixed.

No worries on Sandy Springs Toyota! I bought the truck there 13 years ago and never went back. They gave it to me for the price I wanted (no one else would). I had a shop up here that I would take my truck to when I did not have time to do something myself. Unfortunately they went under with the economy. I was looking at Southern Offroad as they put my OME shocks and lift in years ago. They are closer but if you and pfran can vouch for ACC, I will give them a call in the AM.

What color is your rig? I keep seeing a dark blue 100, and a white 100 that are lifted.

I'll definitely vouch for ACC. They installed new 4.88 gears, front and rear air lockers and did a bunch of odds and ends on my truck when I grenaded my front diff this summer. I have been going to them since day 1. Their prices are very reasonable and all they really work on is Land Cruisers all day. Tell Brian, Michael and Will that Paul and Nick sent you. I bet you end up drinking a beer or two from their customer appreciation fridge while you peruse the assortment of 40s, 60s, 80, and 100s they are working on.
