I need to start my engine but I dont have a radiator on, will the atf spill out of the lines or does it need to be in gear to pump atf?

I'm pretty sure the pump in the tranny runs all the time the engine is running. That said, I remember a long time ago when I had a '78 Bronco, auto tranny. It was a radiator shop having the rad rebuilt. It was parked outside and the guy was running late finishing it up. While I'm standing there, he starts it up and backs it into the shop - with no radiator in it. I freaked. He said, "no big deal." Yea, well maybe not to you but we could have easily pushed the thing back into the shop. No need to risk it. I used to work for Fel-Pro gaskets in a previous life. We did all kinds of crazy things to engines on dynomometers. It doesn't take long to warp a head or trash the head gasket when the cooling jacket isn't filled with water. My Bronco survived but I'd avoid doing it if possible.
