Another 230V outlet plug question for a welder.

:hhmm: so you want to run a 50 amp welder off of a 30 amp outlet! and if you are planing on any extension cord for a welder, i would not go under 6 gauge wire, but then i am just the town drunk, and no nothing about electricity!

6 gauge is overkill. It is nice, but completely unnecessary.

I would say a 6 gauge is NOT nice if you don't need it. It is just heavy and not easy to move around.

I have several extension cords in 6, 8, and 10 gauge. Most of the time I reach for my 20' section of 10 gauge extension cord for my general welding duties. If I need something bigger and/or need more distance, I'll use the 6 and 8 gauge.

At this point in time I'm going to go with changing the plug on my extension cord. I know it will be an inconvenience to move the washer and dryer every time, but after asking myself the question of "how many times will I really need to weld 3/8" thick metal", I decided not that many.

Really, the main reason is I'm going to need it for an SOA conversion and a Saginaw PS conversion. I don't see what else I'd be using a it for. Maybe one day when I get an electric car, but that ain't happening anytime soon.
