Chicago,

Did you happen to make the run from the Saline Valley hot springs area to Steel Pass? If not, can you describe how bad a road/trail that is?

My son and I are planning our 4 week summer desert trip and we'll be spending one week at DVNP/Saline Valley. One route we plan to take is coming in from the north at Crankshaft Crossing, down the Eureka Valley road through Steel Pass and then camp at the Lower Springs.

Thanks,

Al

I've done this a number of times in both directions. There are a few rocky patches up near the top of the pass on the Saline side, but overall, it's easy going. The dirt road from crankshaft to Eureka dunes is quite easy, with graded dirt the entire way.

Between Eureka Dunes and Steel Pass you will come into Dedeckera Canyon. It is a very scenic narrow canyon. There are four step ledges to get up. You should be fine with most any 4wd rig as long as your not pulling a long RV type trailer and/or long low slung rig.

Here's a few pics from this canyon...

Yeah, that is a BEAUTIFUL trail back there. We had 3 stock rigs roll through there last year without a spot. Youll be fine.
I tried to take pics back there, but they never do it justice!
I wish I knew how to take photos well. Maybe someday!

Enjoy your trip. Id love to spend an extended perior of time down there some day!
There is SOOOO much to see.

how did the bumper work for you?

Looks like someone brought their 200 on the run? Black in color, no less? That takes some balls concerning the pin-striping factor alone!

The bumper did great. I was a bit worried about the washboard like I mentioned above, but I had no issues with it. Kept checking my welds, kept checking the swingout alignement...all was good.
Must have done OKAY job!

Thanks for asking!
