A very expensive and not very nice "high-end" stereo installer left this rattle for me after botching a job. Too late to go back to them.

If I push down exactly where my thumb is in the picture I can make it stop. It's driving me nuts and searching (which I am admittedly not that great at) has provided no suggestions, nor can I seem to find how to take this area apart to fill it with construction foam (kidding). But I sure would like to make it stop.

If anyone can suggest a course of action or point me to the right thread 't'would be much appreciated.

Also, you may be able to see that the faux chrome on the bezel surrounding the shift gate is deteriorating. I'm presuming I can just remove the 'chrome' down to black and still use it.

Not sure why the pic is upside down... it wasn't on my computer.

Thanks, and happy holidays!

Remove the console and I'm sure you'll find a wire rattling against the transfer case lever or vibrating against the console. It's like a 5 min job to pull that apart. There is a detailed thread on here somewhere. Should be a very simple fix.

Buy some thin adhesive-backed felt tape. Great for wrapping wire bundles (as well as putting between trim bits that chatter).

Grab the console cover in the cup holder area and pull up gently. There are 6 clips holding it down. Two back by armrest two middle and two at dash. Once you get it started, you can gently pry up with a screwdriver blade wrapped in masking tape to prevent damage.

You'll also have to unscrew the ball at the top of the t-case and shift knobs. And, once you get the clips undone, reach under and release the seat heater connections so you don't break them. The whole assembly will rotate towards the rear of the vehicle IIRC.

OK. Cup holder is not part of the console assembly, correct?

Thanks.

this is where I get confused. is it part of the armrest console or the shifter console? if part of the shifter console then it will come out with the main assembly?

YES... It is part of the shifter console. Yeah... forgot to mention t-case knob and switch connections.

My 100 is in about 100 pieces right now so here are some photos of the center console area and the console itself. You can see the six clip connections in the second photo.

If yours is like my 99, then that rattle you hear is probably something hitting the metal support piece on the underside of the console.

that's very helpful.

thanks!

oh yeah, what kind of stores stock adhesive backed felt tape?

Sorry if i added to the confusion. Sometimes I overstate to prevent the land cruiser posting police from showing up.

The cup holder is a separate piece that is screwed to the main console cover (the pic above nicely illustrates it). So as you found its one unit for your purposes.

Amazon Prime, McMaster-Carr, etc. you want to get the thin stuff so you can use it between panels if needed.

no worries and thanks for the clarification. my confusion (which isn't unusual!) stems from the fact that often people refer to the armrest assembly as the 'console' as well, so just trying to make sure I know what's supposed to move when I start pulling on stuff.

overstatement is a good thing when you're dealing with mechanical geniuses such as I!
