I've been following the various alternator discussions on the board over the last few months.

I posted a few times detailing my experiences - all the classic symptoms of a bad alternator. Instead of replacing the brushes like I should have, I had my local stealer replace the whole deal.

Anyway, it's been replaced for about a month now but the voltage needle on the dash still moves a bit (and then returns to normal) when I turn on the headlights, use the windows, etc. Is this indicative of a more involved issue? This doesn't happen on my 100 and never happened with my previous 80.

It's running well and doesn't seem to have any other issues other than the needle moving when I use things that draw power...

Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks!

did your stealer use a remanned unit form toyota or a local parts guy. Just better to know for sure. my parts dept grabs a lot of parts form napa when they dont have the right ones in stock and it is a rush job. other than that not sure mine is a 3FE and aside from some inadequate wiring is all good.

does this only happen at idle? if so I would not wory about it

Dave - Yeah, the stealer had to order and wait for Toyota parts. I made sure of it. I was surprised to learn that it was a refurbed unit (that's the protocol I was told). The stealer has a life long guarantee on the part and labor but I wanted to make sure that there aren't bigger, more complex demons at work here.

RT - Noticeable at idle for sure but it happens while driving as well. For example, it you roll up the windows while moving and watch the needle, it doesn't really move until they are up. If you keep it held, it dips until you release the window buttons. Same with the head lights - even when driving there is a small click in the needle (not as much as the window example). The radio, map lights, etc don't have an impact - I guess they don't draw enough voltage...

Thanks for the responses. Trying to nip this thing in the rear before I'm miles offroad and the true nature of the problem (if there is one) decides to surface.

Thanks,
Andy

Agreed.

OK, thanks everyone for reading / replying.

My 100 doesn't do this and I can't remember my previous 80 doing this. I guess I'm still a little gunshy after the bad alternator left me sitting a few weeks ago.

This board is an invaluable source of info. Kudos to all that make it work!

Andy

At idle with the head lights on (HIR bulbs) my bulbs dim when I put the tranny in R.
I think it might have something to do with the 50W backup bulbs.
