I have a Geo Prizm (corolla clone with toyota engine) and had recently had the ABS warning light go on, with the battery warning light going on when reving the engine up (but the batt. light goes off when RPM is at idle). I think that this might be the alternator going bad but don't understand why the ABS light stays on first. The radio does have a whining background noise that is more prevalent when reving also. I turned on everything and expected to lose power but the engine didn't stop. I'm gonna swap batteries before fiddling around with the alternator. What else could it be and what do you think? Thanks for the input.

I think, (but not 100% sure) that the 62 have an external regulator. If so there's your problem.

The regulator can either drop volts, or increase to an "unsafe" range....

Hope this helps

huh ?!?!?!?! :flipoff2:

Come on youve heard that one before.

Guy goes into the doctor who tells him he has cancer.

it's problably the funniest thing that my mother said to me when I asked her for a second opinion about the clothes I was gonna wear. And she was never witty nor can tell a joke without cracking up!

I vote the alternator but the battery is worth a try. The whining in the radio is maybe from interference from a dying alternator
I would also check BOTH ends of the battery leads, this can give the same effect as a worn out alternator
My theory is the ABS light comes on to tell you its not going to work if something goes wrong with the brakes ect. Just a guess though.

the lights make me think bad ALT, fj62's+ turn on alot of dash lights when the alt is dying, I imagine a Corola does similar.

and BTW fj62 in internal regulator.

when the alt in my Corolla went, I just got the charge light and not other weirdness. I think the voltage reg is internal, but I'm not positive. I pretty much agree with the above, though.

Good luck changing that thing out. There's no room, unless you have small hands. SUCKS!

A good test for the alternator is to disconnect the battery while the car is running. If the alternator is not putting out enough power to run the car the engine will die. If it doesn't die you can turn on all the accessories as see if it taxes the system. ( I just did this to my '93 Toyota Pickup and found the alternator was bad)
