So the alt went in my 90 HDJ81 (1HD-T), the amature is finished, so no point in rebuilding. The Japan model is $700.00, but I found one at the local parts source from a 1991 Tricell (no idea how to spell that). Everything matches up.... mounts, plugs. ect. it is a 70 amp unit from Champion and is only $230.00 and it has a 3 year warrenty

Anyone else try this?? Any thoughts??

I wouldn't think that the 4,200 cc 1HD-T would have the same alternator as the 1,300cc-ish Tercel, but I could be wrong, I guess!

Good luck!

I've just run a quick search on the EPC and found that on the '90 the 1HD-T/1HZ came with 60, 80, or 100A alternators.

It "should" have come with the 60A unit unless it was the cold-climate package (80A for the HZ and 100A for the 1HD-T). Another search with those PN's for the 80's alternators did not reveal that they shared the alternators with other vehicles.

Anyway, HTH's!

The 1HZ in the 75 series have 110 amp as standard and 120 amp are available as a replacement. I think the 80 series DX models in oz run the 110 amp also.
You can get them from ebay for under $400AUD. I got mine for $320 as a favour.
They are identical to Denso alt in quality but dont carry the brand name. My auto electrician says they are made in Taiwan or Malaysia under lic

This is mine, tested under full load at 137 amps and still good after 2 1/2 years:D

Diesels usually have lower amp alternators. I say if the shoe fits... you know the rest.

 Im forgetting you guys have 24v systems. So the 60 amp alternator is like a 120

I think I'm gonna give it a try..... Like I say, EVERYTHING matches, and see how as after the thing is running there isn't really much load (unless you have a big ass stereo) on these units... what the hell why not.... Toyota wouldn't have changed the pins on the connecting plug.

Oh and I talked to my Dad (he is an airline mechanic and a master electrician, and one of those a**holes who can fix prity much anything) and he looked at the old one and mentioned how small the main power feed out of it was (like a #10) which isn't good for too big a load. He figures that with that size wire the biggest factory alt would be around 80 Amps.

Going to put it in today.... will let you know how it works.....

Nope, we are 24v just for starting- 12v rest of the time.

Diesels of course don't have an extensive electrical load (mechanical injection diesels anyway) and so the alternators are often low amps. I think my old BJ60 was only a 55 or 60 amp unit.

Let us know how you make out.

Hey MAC... are the majority of LC's with the dual battery setup this way? I think mine is but I'm not sure... Just curious....

Could you school me on this? I was tracing an electrical problem which was just a fuse but while I was under there I hooked up my meter to the starter to prove to my Dad that it was 24V start - he's a diesel mechanic so he tried between the starter and solenoid and all the other combinations - no matter where we tested we only got 12.4 - 12.6 volts when I turned the key over...

Whats up??

**please do post up your findings onesfatchevy on the alternator - curiious about that one.

The 1HD-T also comes with a 12 volt starter that looks like and bolts up the same way as my 24 volt starter. The difference is in the wires inside. I like the idea of a 12 volt and plan to have my starter re-wound to 12 volts if ever my solenoid/relay ever gives up the ghost again. Drexx has a 1HD and his starts with 12 volts. We found this difference out when he had starter problems and came to me for one of my extras.

Deiseldan, whereas your posting implies that your 1HD-T came with 2 batteries, I suspect you have the 24 volt starter like mine. I doubt you'll see 24 volts in your measure until you actually try to crank the starter.

Well FINALLY had the time to get the alt in.... Worked like a charm... only did a 15 min test run, but everything appears to be good... There ya go a cheep alternative to the big buck factory alt..... at less than half the price with a 3 year warranty, I'll take it..

... actually my Dad metered the voltage at the starter when I cranked - 12.4 -12.6V - the truck sure turns over as if it were on 24V start - crank key and it's literally instantaneous.

I'd like to note the part number of that alternator...

My starter has a 24v decal on the housing. Yours may have been changed out for a 12v or it's possible that your 12/24v switching solenoid isn't working.

good to hear it worked. I have done the same with my 89 3BII BJ75. I can use the alt from a similar year toyota pickup - 4cyl or v6 they both work.

does the tercel alternator have the same two row pulley on it or did you have to swap yours?

I need one of these alternators with a double pulley for a 1HZ. Do you have the part number?

I had to swap pullys (mine has a double V belt, the trecell has a single wider belt, called a serpintiene belt I think.) but with an impact wrench that took all of 2 minutes.... I will get the part # for you...

My 1hdt has a 12 v starter. It has a plantary gear set to give it more power to crank the high compression diesel.
