I have successfully swapped a Hitachi(4HF1) ,24V, 60A, with the vacuum pump, for the stock 25A Alternator of my 1982 BJ40.

This 4HFI Alternator originally comes with Isuzu 4HFI Engine.
WDT Siri,

I see. Thank you for that info. Any modifications done to fit in the 4HF1 alternator i.e. modification on the mounting bracket, pulley size/fitment, etc.? I'd like to hear from you.

And by the way, 60a is way much better than 25a. More nifty stuff to install like electric winch, spot lights, flood lights, dedicated ice cooler and the likes. Sweet!

Cheers,

Carlo

Could someone simply substitute a 1980 Toyota coaster bus bb10 24v alternator instead? They are 60amp and are the same b engine as the Landcruiser. Would they not plug right in and bolt in also stock?
I wish someone would answer this question. I was curious myself.

Hoping somebody can answer this now... 2.5 years later. Facing same issue on my 1980 BJ40 with 24V alternator and bad stator. Cannot find a decent replacement.
It depends how much of a purist you are..
Personally, I have fitted a generic (modern) internally regulated alternator, and abandoned the external regulator.

This of course leaves you without the vacuum pump, so I've fitted a modern electric vacuum pump which I find to be excellent.

Well at this point I like your plan! Can you send me parts numbers and maybe a picture of your setup? I have found some crazy expensive options but I am not necessarily a purist!

I'll see what I can dig out tomorrow.
My Vacuum pump was JLR I think, the pressure switch came from China.
The alternator is whatever you can find locally that fits.

I picked up my vacuum pump on ebay for about £20 - a used Hella UP28 from a Range Rover (Strange Lover).
This is then controlled by a vacuum switch which I got from Aliexpress, although I guess you could use a relay and your existing vacuum switch if it has enough hysteresis built in - I didn't have one to test as my whole vac tank was missing.

Note - both are running at 12v on mine.

I like your problem solving! now to make it work in a 24v system! Thanks for the prompt, detailed reply and all the info! The search sometimes is just as fun as fixing it! Although driving the old gal is the best! It's winter here now so I have a bout 6 months to figure it out in northern minnesnowta! Your rig is sharp, in your profile photo!

Probably easiest is to run the positive side to the switched 24v (e.g. engine fuse), and the negative side to the +12v at the battery (worth adding an extra fuse at this point too since it's non-chassis).

Huh, never considered this. It might just work!

I have been thinking of trying a Toyota hilux 24v alternator. The plug is the same and comes with a vacuum pump on rear. It’s bit spendier but fleabay is littered with them. The specs are also nearly identical. Anybody on here able to convince me this is a waste of time and money?

Here is a candidate
