I am looking for a formed heater hose for my '96 LX450 that will replace the oem 90 degree elbow connecting the heater tee to the rear heater pipe on the right side of the firewall. It's located just to the rear, and to the right of, the back end of the valve cover.

It's shown in the Toyota and Lexus parts manuals but is unavailable seperately from the complete heater pipe kit. Cdan has given me some advice, and I am going to check out some possibilities, but I was wondering if anyone else has replaced that hose, and what did you use? Got a part number? I'm hoping a Toyota part or readily available (NAPA) hose will work with some trimming.

The hose is 90 degree bend x 1.5 inches x1.5 inches x 12 mm id (1/2 inch)

What a PITA this is! If you have rear heat and haven't changed this hose, pay attention! There is no way a straight generic hose will work.

Thanks, John

Hi John,

I replaced ALL of the hoses at the firewall on my 96 lx last weekend.

Are you talking about the 90 degree preformed heater hose that connects to the heater bypass valve to a metal pipe then the pipe to PHH (the bypass valve has a cable actuator) That hose would be on the driver side behind the valve cover.

I decided to remove that metal pipe that connected the PHH and the bypass valve, and replace it with green silicon hose and constant tension clamps. So far no leaks, no rubbing and no problems.

BTW, CDAN was able to get me all the preformed hoses. I still have a few that I did not use. Some of the preformed hoses were replaced with silicon green hose and constant tension clamps. The silicon hose has much more flex than regular EPDM hose.

I replaced that hose on my 93 a few years ago. I'll go out and see what it is.

John,

Looks like a plain piece of straight hose. Then I split another piece of hose just for the curved section and used it and a hose clamp in the center to keep it from collapsing. 30k miles and working fine.

The hoses related to the rear heater are not 5/8 they are more like 12mm and are not serviced seprately, you have to buy the rear heater pipes to get them from MR T. The one John is refering to is on the RH side of the engine and does have a healthy bend in it. I found a 22RE bypass hose that may possibly work in that location. I was unable to get out to my vehicle before dark and mine is burried under the relocated throttle body and methanol injection pump.

Driver or passenger side? If this is the hose on the passenger side than any auto parts store can order from Gates or Goodyear a 1/2 inch heater hose with a molded 90 degree bend. Cut each leg to necessary length.

My local parts store was able to find a formed 1/2 hose that can be trimmed to work.

Did you do the "shop the bins" approach we spoke of?

Hey Dan - I just gave the counter guy the old hose, explained slowly and in single syllable words that I needed something that could be cut down to match, and he popped back in about 60 seconds with a kinky 1/2 inch i.d. hose that looked as if it would work fine. I don't know the application and he said it would take forever to match the part number to the specific vehicle.

I cut out a 90 degree section and installed it and wasn't real thrilled with the tightness over the nipples - I think a metric (12 mm) hose would be a better fit than a 1/2 inch. But two screw-type clamps secured the hose nicely and there were no leaks when I pumped the system up to 15 psi, so I guess it worked out ok. I don't think the 1/2 hose would have sealed with the OEM spring clamps....

Thanks very much for your help the other day.

John

John,

Don't toss those spring clamps!! I'll take them off your hands. In a week or so I'm doing my PHH and I always have to scavenge one from elsewhere on the vehicle. I'll pick them up at your home or office!

Sorry, Doug - they are going into my spares box. I didn't use them on that new heater hose, but I like them in other areas. Ever have one go "Ziiiiiing!" and disappear into the boonies? They will launch off a pair of pliers like a rocket....

John

I have launched a couple. Those tiny ones as I recall and they developed some respectable velocity. Thanks anyhow.
