Are the alternator brushes supposed to be the same length??

One of mine is 16mm and the other is 12mm is ~ 4mm difference ok?

Manual says minimum 5.5mm and standard is 20mm exposed. Is there a procedure for checking the IC regulator is functioning properly??

now that being said, it is possible who ever installed the brushes held the wire at different lengths when he sodered them in so when you pull them out one drops further...

hey while yer on the subject of alternators and brushes, my 87 bj70 has all the idiot lights stay on and volt meter stay lowish, when I first start it , until I hit the gas once, then there's a bit of a click, idiot lights go out, voltage goes up and all is fine. Does this every time I start it.

was thinking of changing the brushes and seeing what happens, anything else I should look at in there?

cheers,
ryan

Mine does that too. I've read that it's pretty common. I noticed that the alt. doesn't put out full voltage until after all the lights go out. I've got no clue why it does that though.
