Hej all,

I'm at Redstone Arsenal for the next couple months and I'd like to get all four wheels aligned on my '94 FZJ80 before I head back home.

Any recommendations for a shop in/around Huntsville?

Thanks!!

Haha Matt I don't think he wants to do it himself for some reason.

I guess not. I was just a little peeved that he came in the club forum and asked for help, I replied from vacation at the beach on my phone, and he bumped the thread without acknowledging my response.

Imagine if it was an actual clubhouse instead of a virtual one(how I actually feel about this forum and how it was intended from the start):

Smokejumperguy, walking into the club without any introductions: "hey guys I'm in town for a few weeks and noticed the club when I was driving by, anyone here know a place in Huntsville to get a 4 wheel alignment done?"

Everyone in the club stares at Smokejumperdude in silence for an uncomfortably long time.

Matt - looking into the parking lot to see if he actually drives a landcruiser and if so, what kind: "looks like you drive an 80, they have solid axles front and rear and don't have much that can be aligned by a shop. Toe is the only thing and it is easy to do in the driveway with a tape measure."

Smokejumperguy, looking past Matt and ignoring his answer: "anyone else?"

I imagine at this point everyone would stop staring and just go back to their conversation. Or maybe laugh and say I guess he didn't want your advice.

well....sit back and take a break for a few...

it may be that the guy is just simply looking for a shop and any other reply is not on his radar screen or maybe he is new to the board/forum stuff.

There is only one truck that I can think of that you can do 4wheel alignement and that would be one of the GM pickups with that screwed up rear end that steers to a minor degree...

I work in Huntsville but I don't have any reccomendations for a alignment shop there or I would have posted. I dont' have any for where I live either, excect for one guy who does that type of work at home as a side job (he has a full alighment machine at home) and works really just on local stuff. SOme of these alighment shops are all about selling parts that are not broken and performing services that are not needed.

No, I'm fine - just thought it was rude.

my experience with any alignment shop and these trucks has always been negative. The toe is the only thing they can adjust, and they always get it wrong and the steering wheel will be crooked. I took mine to get a caster reading at firestone, they screwed up and did a "full" alignment and insisted that I had to pay for it even though they didn't do anything. when it was all said and done the tech spent two hours driving the truck, adjusting the steering, trying to get the steering wheel straight and it still wasn't. I had to re-align it in the driveway the next day because the toe was not set correctly after all that.

your best bet would be to find a smaller mom and pop type place that would do it for cheap and has experience with a solid axle.

That was a great mental picture you painted for us and literally made me lol. I work in Huntsville too but have no clue of a good shop either since I align the 80 in the driveway and have even done the camry there too.

typed badly on my iPhone using IH8MUD

sorry for the delay !

I just returned to the clubhouse, and SURPRISE…I’m being flamed.

Sorry for offending you (bhmmapping). You gave me a great answer; but it just didn’t answer my question.

In retrospect I should have thanked you for your comment before assuring you that I am really looking for that valuable (local) recommendation for that “mom and pop shop” that can check that not only are my front wheels aligned, but the axles are square to the frame and parallel to each other (and have the tools and experience to make it all right if needed).

I definitely do NOT want to visit the alignment shop that screwed bhmmapping over! So a comment like "this place sucks...don't go there" is equally valuable!

FWIW, I also chuckled at the picture bhmmapping painted, even though it was at my expense.

I would call Dan at rocket city offroad and ask him who to use

No problem, glad you came back. If the axles aren't parallel I really can't imagine what a shop would do other than replace bushings. There is no adjustment for that. It is very unlikely that the tires would be perfectly centered on the frame unless the suspension just happened to be at the perfect height. again, without installing adjustable panhard rods there is no adjustment for that. Most places will gladly charge you for a full alignment and all they will do is set the toe.
