I have found a combination of mods that could add Steering wheel functionality to standard steering wheels.

It would require removing the covers on standard wheels and then putting the below:

1) This is the cover for steering wheels WITH steering wheel controls (perhaps someone can confirm). Available in 3 colours Brown , Grey and Black

2) These are the controls that fit on the sides of the cover above. Also available in 3 colours: Brown, Grey and Black.

Would these be 'plug and play' I guess into non-SWC steering wheels? I guess is the question.

Then I think you would need some sort of Toyota specific steering wheel control interface , to interface between the SWCs & the head unit.

There are ones out there but have not found one on AliExpress as yet. Example below of Universal:

I have wanted to do this for a long time but, don't know how long it might take and I have limited time. No stereo store in my town seemed to want to do it.

I was wanting to buy a steering wheel from a 2004+ LX and transplant it on my 2001 LX. I also think you need a clockspring and some additional wiring from the steering wheel to the radio.

Dunno man, you can get Steering Wheel control interfaces from AliExpress as well. The good thing with this is you keep the steering wheel + functions, just add the controls and then wire it to your head unit using the correct SWC interface. (picture above is a universal one)

I have a feeling getting the cover off would take near complete dissaembly of the steering wheel though. The cruise control and everything can stay the same, its just the original cover coming off, new smaller one designed for controls going back on as well as the controls themself. Curious if the cover and controls would fit on the non-SWC steering wheel.

Cover IS airbag. You will have to loose airbag in order to put some kind of cover.
As far as I can see, it fits all the standard gear that came from the old wheel. Do you mean that the steering wheel controls get in the road of the airbag ? i.e. in the steering wheel control models that function is not possible? Just trying to understand you there.

Ok, I guess I don't understand what you have there. What LC do you have? In US we have 2 different kinds of SW. pre-03 does not have any buttons (big airbag), 03+ comes with smaller airbags and buttons on sides.

Actually, I did get rid of bunch of buttons when doing steering wheels..

First picture shows just plastic cover. That tells me it needs to go in place of airbag.

So, what do you have today? And what do you try to modify?

Because if it's 03+ - buttons already there, only adapter needed.
If it's -03 - you will have to either go with newer wheel, but then you need different clock spring and I don't know what else.

Yeah, think we're sort of understanding each other. I have seen another thread with the back of the cover after its taken off the steering wheel. There is a gold metal plate and white Airbag in front ? That would be my concern if its not plug and play. I'm not even exactly sure what the clock spring is, what is that ?

I have exactly this: FZJ105R :

The cover is smaller to fit the controls (above pic). So my thoughts could you rip off this cover, stick on the one made for the SWC and then whack the controls on as well. Viola, then wire the interface to communicate to the headunit. Cruise control is still their not touched, as with everything else .

Ahhhh, they come with smaller airbags. s***e that would probably cause some problems

I think 2002- and 2003+ have different airbag plugs ( not exactly sure but I think one has only one plug whereas the other has two plugs) 2003 and upwards sure has some great features added but personally I prefer the older interior for some reason

In my opinion, the pre 2002 LX’s had the best looking interiors. I love that Yamaha real wood!
