Hi All,

On my 1/73 fj40 the carb has an open port on the base side facing the valve cover. There are two ports, one pointed directly at the valve cover is plugged and the other that is pointed about 70 degrees off vertical appears to be open. From looking around the forum I think this is supposed to be an idle mix adjustment, but I am unsure and was looking for clarification. I have attached a pic highlighting the port in question.

Thanks!

Yes, idle air mix screw. Might look like one of these, sometimes they come in a rebuild kit...

I purchased a keyster carb rebuild kit from Cruiser Teq and put the mix screw in that port. The fit is very loose, is there supposed to be a spring or something to hold tension on the screw? There is virtually no turning resistance until I hit the bottom. Additionally, it is hard to tell from the pic above, my screw sticks out almost an inch when screwed all the way in. Is that expected?

Thanks!

A lot of mixture screws have a coil spring to retain the setting. The fit of the screw taper is way more important than the length as long as it screws to the "off" position. Don't force it or you can damage the screw/seat.

Yes, a spring.

Some screws seem to have a longer body, the important part is the threads and pointy bit, which look about the same

I was cruising fleabay a couple of weeks ago (something I haven't done for a long time) and I did see a rebuild kit that came with the spring.

Of course, given the choice between spending $35 on a rebuild kit, and $55 on a chicom carb that I could harvest not only a spring, but a new sight glass, jet access plugs and air horn screws, I'd go that route.
