First post cherry popped!

I have looked around on here for an answer, but can't seem to find one. Either I am not forum savvy enough yet or it is due to my zombie-like state of mind after the birth of our daughter last month.

I am new to the cruiser/IH8MUD family, but have always loved the Land Cruisers/FJs since I was a kid. I recently purchased (last month) a 2000 TLC 100 series with 147k on the clock. It is in great shape at first glance. I have not had a chance to get under her or thoroughly dig around in the engine bay, but looks to be garage kept and leather is in almost new condition. Things I do know is that an aftermarket muffler has been welded on and an K&N CAI has been installed. At first I was going to live with the CAI and get a less noisy performance exhaust, but after reading on here the horror stories of dust and water problems with the K&N I want to go back to stock. I have noticed that my in town mileage so far is 9 mpg which i know is off from the expected 13 mpg. Could this be caused by a dirty MAF sensor or TB? I have read conflicting arguments where some believe CAI help mpg and others say it worsens it. More air means more fuel consumption so I am leaning towards the first opinion, but who knows.

The parts obviously didn't come with the cruiser so I will have to acquire from somewhere. Where is the best place to get this and is this the best choice? I have done some quick searching and cannot find a good parts website. Any suggestions to get me in the right direction would be great. Also, has anyone had any luck with "quiet" (Little louder than stock ok) performance exhaust systems. I have the tick and will be examining my exhaust manifolds this week as well. Do headers play a role in sound or is it strictly up to the muffler?

Thanks in advance and I am on a slow build, but plan on using this treasure trove of information to help aid me in building a medium build rig for camping and excursion.

Welcome to MUD! Good info on here. I suspect it’s tough to have 2 new babies at once, one human and one Land Cruiser. If you haven’t found the FAQs yet, spend some time poking around on there. It has threads on headers and MAF sensor cleanings.

I would say there is no “expected” gas mileage with a vehicle because the most important variable is driving style. Driven hard, you’ll be lucky to get 9 mpg around town. 13 mpg is the very best around town and that’s only if you pretend there’s an egg you don’t want to break under the accelerator!

The K&N filter could have messed up the MAF sensor if not maintained properly (over-oiled). Modern fuel management systems aren’t going to provide any noticeable change in mpg over stock, so that CAI itself isn’t going to explain your low mpg. Good idea to clean the MAF, whether you replace the CAI or not.

OEM parts both new and used are available from vendors and dealers who are on MUD. Run a search for online parts and several will pop up. Or just run a search for Beno, who is a MUD member and parts guy at an Atlanta-area Toyota dealer and provides discounts to mudders

I have no experience with performance exhaust, but I’m very happy with the OEM cat-back system I put on 2 years ago.

Good luck with the mods and check back in here when you get a break from the new baby(s).

I put my stock one back because the car didn't give me the torque i was used to. The K&N will only give you high speed advantages and considering all the dirt + water that can get into the engine, I quickly put the stock back. The car is driving excellent again, forget about gas mileage advantages.

Try beno for parts. He's a moderator and vendor on this site. Just do a search of "beno" in the search at the top right of the page.
I have not purchased from him yet, but many good things said about him on here regarding parts purchased.
