This is from Dave:
Sorry for not addressing this faster, I am moving office these days and it is sucking up time like mad.
Here is the standard boiler plate and some additional notes for your items.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
First I will write you up a quote. If it meets with your approval then I will issue you a request for payment on Paypal.
Can you reply with your full name, shipping address, phone number and fax number if possible.
You can pay through Paypal with or without an account, as long as you have a credit card.
If you do not have a credit card or do not wish to use one then the only option is a wire transfer. For parts over $1000 it becomes cheaper to do a wire transfer.
Once you have approved the quote and made the payment for the goods I will get the goods in.
As you probably know Japanese manufacturers do not hold inventory, everything is done on a projected "as needed" basis. Sometimes this can cause issues when I ask for oddball parts. In general it is not a problem but I need you to understand this. After ordering I will be issued an expected delivery date. I will alert you if this is longer than I think is acceptable.
Our accounts here are commercial accounts. We are expected to know what we are doing. As such they are non-return accounts. So once we order the goods there is no turning back. So please make sure that you are clear in your information and requests.
I can not quote shipping costs until I have the goods in hand. For a few of the common parts I know what the weights are but most people buy a differing assortment and it gets very complicated to track all the weights and allow for packaging requirements. Engine mounts are heavy but you don't have to pack them in bubble wrap and stuff. Speedometers are light but need a lot of packaging.
I can point you at the EMS shipping rate guide here:
Rate schedule(EMS:All Zones) - Japan Post
EMS is trackable and the insurance costs are low.
I also have accounts with Fedex, UPS and Seino-schenker. However they cost a bit more than EMS. For goods over 30kg in weights I will switch to Fedex unless you ask me otherwise.
In all cases I bill only for the exact cost of shipping.
Once the parts are in,packed and ready for shipping I will ask for payment for the shipping costs.
As soon as payment is made for the shipping I will ship the goods and send you an email with the tracking number as well as a link to the on-line tracking system.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Now on to your specific items.
We know what they weigh. I ship them often.
So ignore the above BS about payment for the shipping as a separate item. I ship at cost, so if the shipping is 1500 yen I bill you 1500 yen. It always irked me when companies added tot eh shipping costs so I do not. But paypal charges me a fee for every transaction, so I actually lose a little on each shipment. So far better for me if I can judge in advance what the total costs are.
The invoice on paypal will be in yen. Paypal will give you a couple of options on the currency conversion. If you let paypal handle the conversion they will charge you about 4% over the interbank rate. If on the other hand you can charge the payment directly to your credit card through paypal in yen your credit card company will handle the conversion. My credit card charges about 1.2% over the interbank rate. Your card company may do things differently than mine. In general when ordering goods from overseas I favour charging directly to my credit card in the overseas currency rather than letting Paypal take a big cut.
I still have not heard back from the maker if he is going to give me an additional break on costs at 5 sets, I pushed him pretty good on the phone. It is funny, I sell to him as well and he always asks me to ship before he pays the invoice but he always refuses to ship my orders till I do the bank transfer. Trusting sole. Anyway, built into the single item costs are the inland shipping from him to me and the cost of the bank transfer from me to him, if I am doing this once it is obliviously cheaper than doing it five times.
If I am shipping all sets to one address and they are then redirected from there it is cheaper to ship per unit, depending on what the costs over there are to reship. If you are only going to save a dollar or two it might be better to ship direct from here to multiple addresses there.
A set of front and rear weigh just under 3,000 grams.
So shipping one set costs 5,400yen.
Assuming that the packaging weights proportionally to the item count 5 sets would cost 19,500 yen to ship to one address, a discount of 1,500yen per set.
If your cost of shipping in the US is say $10 per or less then that might be the way to go.
I am not going to be able to do much about this till the beginning week of January as everything here kind of winds down for the New Years celebrations.
I purchased a set from Dave already. I emailed him and he sent me a paypal invoice in Yen. It sounds like the manufacturer isn't going to give us a break but where we could save money is shipping. If there's enough interest we could get them shipped to one stateside location from Japan and then ship them out to each person. This would require some logistics. If anyone is interested and has a shipping account that would probably be the easiest route.
Let me know.
