Hi folks. I have a 97 80 series I'm trying to insure and running into some problems due to modifications. I know this gets asked a lot, but it seems like in the past year or so, a lot of these policies have changed or are being stricter about certain things.

Hagerty denied me because it is lifted and has a winch (their words, not mine). I have two other cars with them, so no stranger to them but they wouldn't insure it.

I have tried ACI in the past, but they would only insure my other cars to get ice cream (?), they flatly told me I couldn't even drive it to dinner once a week. Again, their words, not mine. So they are out.

Progressive and State Farm both now go through Hagerty.

Grundy appears to require it to be garaged, which would be great, but the car won't fit in my garage.

I'd rather not roll the dice with my other insurers (USAA, Geico, Progressive) on replacement value since I know it'll be a fraction of what I have in the car. Anyone have advice on others that will insure in NC for occasional off road use and driving, but not as a daily.

Thanks.

Hagerty is starting to seem like scam artists. Always a different answer from them!
yea, I felt a little put out by them, they acted all helpful about it, collected the cars info, then told me no. It seems like they were collecting info so they could tie it to my policy and refuse it. When I talked to them about usage on the other 3 cars I've insured with them in the past, they were a lot more helpful, but that was over a year ago. They told me the car didn't meet the guidelines for the type of car they insure, but it seems like plenty of folks have similar vehicles insured with them.

These agreed value providers all seem scummy to me, ACI was profoundly worse on the phone to me. I was very polite but she basically told me I couldn't use the car for anything but driving around in circles. They were nice, but their usage restrictions were ridiculous.

I'm getting rid of the other cars on their policy soonish and will probably not use them again, but it's not like there are a ton of options for those sorts of policies.

Hmm, I have Hagerty that I got 3 1/2 years ago when I picked my rig up...no issues with the lift and mods. I did $35k agreed value and last year they suggested I bump it up to $45k for a couple of hundred more a year in premium. That said, Hagerty is a broker only and not the actual insurer, so I guess things are getting more strict on the rules. The underwriter on my policy is Essentia Insurance as listed on my declarations page. They also suggested "cherished value" coverage...it's supposed to be a full release of the vehicle to me for no additional fee to recover any part-out (or rebuild) value if it gets "totaled". All that said, mine is garage kept and a reason why I still roll on 35's to just fit in the door...also, I'm not in a hurry to test any parts of my coverage for them to have the chance to give me a big :flipoff2:.

I have a beach condo in Ocean City, MD, just a little 1 bedroom in a 6 unit building, not ocean front, but ocean view between 2 other buildings...after all of the nationwide natural disasters with floods, fire, storms, etc. over the last several years, the consensus is to NEVER let that policy lapse as I not only won't be able to get a decent rate, but probably no coverage at all as many insurers now won't even touch coastal properties.

Yeah, my 80 was insured by them for actual value, then at renewal, they changed their stance on everything, so we went to Progressive. Six mos. later, then they reversed their stance back to the original, so we returned. I expect more games at the next renewal. 👎

My feeling/read on it is that if you can get past the gatekeeping of getting the policy approved, the actual underwriting is much more lenient. They just decide whether to let you in or not, that's the strict part.

The ACI policy docs, for instance, say nothing about only being able to use the car to get ice cream (again, exact words), yet when you talk to them on the phone - that's exactly what they tell you. OTOH they told others something entirely different. I guess that means it's harder for them to not pay out when you get an actual policy, but they gatekeep the policy and have a bunch of restrictions.

I did talk to Hagerty about storage once and they said it was relative to the value of the car, but it seems kinda like it depends on the mood of the other person on the line.

May I suggest reaching out to American Modern, there used to be an agent in my AAA office, they offer specialty coverage policies. I will admit that I have not had to add or adjust the policy in a while and things may have changed for new policies. They do have an agreed value option but not sure how competitive they are in this new era of insurance strictness. To note: I have one vehicle that is declared parked int he driveway as I cannot get it in my garage and they didn't make any fuss and both current ones do not have a hard NTE xxxx miles per year but there is some verbiage that the vehicle is not a daily driver (I also had to show I had a daily).

I am currently insured with Hagerty with a stated value policy ($35K) with a Cherished Salvage Coverage. 2.5" Lift, 35" Tires, Bumpers, Winch, etc.

Same setup here except 1in more lift, they declined it after asking me about the car. I specified same value :/
