What’s the deal with my instrument panel ? Is that a homemade panel ?
What was the main reason for changing from the factory gauges ? are the gauges mounted under the dash aftermarket ?

Yup, homebrew. All the gauges you have are aftermaket.

Who knows why PO's do what they do.

Are you going back to stock or updating your aftermarket gauges?

Marks Off Road has dozens of factory gauge assemblies for sale, and for some gee whiz "eye candy" pieces check out ebay #253544846596.

A lot of the speedos themselves break down over time. The magnets that spin the gauge lose their magnetism and there's nothing to do to fix it. Unless you can somehow get new magnets but that does not seem an easy thing to do. That's been my experience as I have messed around with a bunch of them.

Going back to factory is going to be very, very, very difficult. The only cluster available is the 4th generation cluster and that won't work with your '71 Cruiser because of all the differences. You should have a 2nd generation cluster.
Your best option is to go digital -► 1962- 84 Toyota FJ40 VHX Instruments
You only need the front of an old cluster.

It won't be easy, but contact @65swb45 first. He has clusters, lots of them.
