A buddy of mine has a 82 BJ60 that he has sitting at his daughters farm and has not started it in 3 years. It has rust for sure, rear hatch, some on the doors, but the frame doesn't seem to have rot.

The batteries are dead and the hubs looked very rusty.

The 3b engine only has 192k on it.

I am wondering how much work it might take to get this cruiser running? If I get it running, I think I could get it pretty cheap.

(My goal is to get it running and drive it until I can buy a rust free fj60 and do a engine swap)

Thanks for any thoughts!

why was it left there to sit?

It can be as easy as pie, or a big ol PITA. Depending on why it is sitting.

My guess, without any more info, is that it will take you twice as long and double the money that you think it will take or need?? Example :Sitting outside?? Better check /replace brake lines.

I probably should have mentioned that.

He used to use it for hunting and fishing, and ended up spending more time golfing as he retired. He moved to a condo, so he didn't have the parking space, so he moved it over to his daughters where she has a lot of property.

Anyone out there have experience with a cruiser that has been sitting for a few years?

Your cheapest option: Sell the engine to me.
Are you in Canada?

Yep, I'm in Vancouver, but I am wanting the engine myself. Just need to find the right clean cruiser.

Should be lots in WA. I got mine in Victoria, 6 years ago.

Just bought an 82 BJ 60. My wife is calling it the rust bucket, mostly I wanted it for the drivetrain. Hadn't been run in two years, fired right up. Got it across the border on Wednesday and made a two hour drive home runs great turned over 460K kilometers on the way home. Started it a few times since I got home just to hear it run and it fires off almost instantly unlike my 62.

Try to get it running then make a decision. Just because it has sat doesn't mean it wont run. Get someone to go with you who knows diesels and wagons

Best of luck
Tony

Sounds great. I'll update everyone when I have some progress.

Thanks Rig, Very useful thread, gives me some confidence. However, this BJ60 has been sitting outside, so might be a bit tougher to get going.

keep it for the engine and drivetrain

Depending on the shape of the engine, keep the engine and drivetrain. Find a good shell in the desert states and ship it north.

These are tough trucks that refuse to give up.
