I heard you can adjust the clutch on the older model 60's to buy some time. Is this true?
I thought I remember hearing that here. Maybe I'm nuts? :flipoff2:

Hm, don't think the 60's have an adjustment at the slave like the 40's do.

.

Huh? I'm pretty sure my 84 is adjustable. I think my 82 was adjustable also. My shop manual (Aug '80) showes two different slave rods - both are adjustable.

you should also be able to adjust the play at the clutch pedal as well....

My '82 BJ60 and the '84 BJ60 that I used to have were both adjustable at the slave cylinder AND the clutch pedal. The slave actuator rod adjustment tends to get seized up by corrosion though. Some WD-40 then use an 8mm and 10mm if I remember right.

I know you can adjust it at the slave like on the 40s(i have already). but i heard of a method of taking off the clutch check plate (dont know what its called) and adujusting the clutch til it starts spinning than back it off just enough so it stops( truck not in gear of course).

Looks like we both could be right.
Top pic is for 60's to Nov. 84.
Bottom is like mine, '84 on.

The clutch return spring was also deleted for the later years.
Personally, I like the earlier models' adjustable rod and return spring setup.

You guys with the earlier setup know if your throwout bearing spins at idle?

Does this change over coorespond with the change in axle shaft length, trans/transfer case brace change, bell housing change, etc. ??? I.E. after 11/84 these systems were mod'ed ???

Would it be possible to retrofit an '87 with adjustable rod/return spring setup ?

Just curious,

I believe axles, axle shafts, and birfs are interchangeable throughout the series.
Drive shafts lengths, t/c linkange, and transmission hump on the other hand, change from 10/85 on, which is why the H55F is touted as a drop in only for the later 60's.

The clutch slave rod should work from an older model since it's just held by the boot and pressure. I'm not sure about the length.

The return spring setup is below. I've thought about adding it, but also cautioned as to why it was later deleted along with the adjustable rod.

This is why I throw the question to the pre 11/84 guys.
Does your throwout bearing spin at idle, and does the return spring keep the throwout bearing from touching the pressure plate.

On my '87, the t/o bearing touches the pressure plate and spins constantly.
I'd rather it didn't, and am curious as to the wisdom of the later model design.

JWest, thanks *great* info !!!

My T/O is causing a bunch of noise. Probably will pull and replace soon. Great question if the previous design didn't spin the T/O @ idle ???

Cheers,
