AC stopped working - and how to R&R AC drier

Was working this morning, then stopped for lunch and no more. Fuse under the hood is good, belt looks fine, pulley is spinning... But push the AC button and nothing engages. Engine is not overheating per the dash gauge, plus it sat for 30 minutes?

Is there another fuse somewhere? Ideas welcome

This is also controlled by low and high pressure switches in the coolant lines. Have you checked your R-134 pressures and levels?

Guy at jiffy lube said my compressor seized... The black round thing on the outside of the pulley is supposed to turn when you push the button, and it ain't turning. 90 degrees here in Montrose, on our way to Ouray. Hoping the Toyota shop calls me back with some availability.... Wife and kids are dropped off down at Target, I love family vacations. :)

Guy at Jiffy lube is not 100% correct, the black ring only turns if the clutch engages. Clutch engagement is controlled by more that just the button. Take it somewhere else. Good Luck, sorry to hear.

Thanks man. Toy shop called back they can fit me in, on my way there now will check it out

Do not beleive this guy so easily ;o)
As CappyKD said, if the gas pressure is not high enough, "The black round thing on the outside of the pulley" is not powered, even if the AC button is pressed.

On LC100, most of the time, the pipe to the rear are involved... around 2000$ to change them.
You can also remove them and have the AC modded to only have cool air on the front... less expensive and more reliable.

I had this trouble last year, had it fixed by a AC specialist (900$, half of these pipe rebuilt) and had another leak somewhere else on the rear pipe few weeks later.
Next time, I'll remove the rear pipe, do myself what needed and have the AC filled

EDIT: I write to slowly

Thanks. So if it is more than just refrigerant, any harm in driving all weekend without AC? Or longer? Can just roll the windows down on Imogene, right? if I have to drop real money, would rather give it to someone I know back on the front range.... Heck AC season is a few weeks from over anyway for that matter.

Nope no harm as long as the compressor doesn't kick on. (defrost uses it) You should be fine. That's the purpose of the pressure switch, prevents compressor from grenading itself due to low oil from refrigerant loss.

Of course a quick AC charge may last you the length of the trip and buy you some time to get it fixed correctly by someone you trust.

BTW, if your compressor was seized, your belt would squeal like a pig and then probably fly off, anytime you engaged the clutch. What's happening is that your clutch is not engaging.

I am 99.999% sure that your compressor is not seized, so don't offer that to the dealer.

Yeah I was thinking that... Fingers are crossed in the waiting room here, at least there's wifi!

Not sure if applicable to you but here, when you want to have the AC filled they have to check for leak first.
If a leak is found they have to drain all the gaz (so you pay for no result except saving ozon)

What I had in mind was a test, then add refrigerant from say AutoZone. Get past his trip, then address it.

Well made it to Ouray, got the camper set up. Cappy was right, cause of quit worky was low refrigerant pressure. Cause of low pressure? AC line with a hole in it. Pn 91641-h0632 to be exact. Cause of hole? It was up against my new DT header. :(. Bummed on so many levels here... Aw well will enjoy the weekend with the family and deal with this later... Going to be a hot weekend.

Ouch, sorry to hear that. Install issue on the headers? Asking for two reasons, your the first I've heard report this. Second, I am having my new DT headers put on next Saturday. Try to enjoy the weekend.

one clamp would solve this. i wouldn't let this deter anyone from a dt header, but suggets clamping the top hose from the ac compressor to the fender, would keep it out of harm's way. i'll try and find my camera, almost embarrasing this is once you see it. at least it appears to be fairly easy to get to..

Sorry to hear Tim! I was hearing of your issue whilst leaving my camper on the side of I-70 due to a double blow out. Not a good camping weekend all around. Call me when you get back, I'll help out with anything you need. Stay cool and worst case if wind noise drives you crazy, go and buy some fans to plug into the inverter. Good luck bro.

Nakman, hope you had a good trip despite the AC issue. Did you get it squared away? Did the header burn thru the flexible ac hose on the drivers side?

made it back fine, was a great weekend even with no AC, didn't hardly miss it. Yes it's the long top flexible hose on the driver side, ordered a new one today along with a new drier. Not sure when I will get to the install, but soon.

Glad you didn't catch fire with no AC :D

Attention peeps with DT headers installed

Cool pic, so you have yours zip tied to the fender? I am thinking something similar, but curious how much slack to leave for engine twisting... Haven't dug into if yet so could be nbd.
