Hate to say it but I would give myself at least 1K budget on this.

Lets say the comp & clutch are shot, add freon, receiver dryer & labor+finding leak after all completed. Factory comp & clutch are where the $$$ are, not to mention that depending on the shop you use if you have a issue after the initail replacement of parts to diag a failed o-ring or line leak will cost more $$$.

FYI...I just fixed the wifes AC on here 80....did all the work myself=still was around $500 for parts. I must admit I would take it to a professionl the AC is a exact science.

agreed, but I wish more profesionals thought so.

grrrrr...... Damn, that's not what I wanted to hear.

I think I have a pretty good AC guy who does good work and stands behind it 100%. Just didn't know how much dough a compressor & other parts cost for a complete replacement and R134 conversion.

I guess I'll see if he can find the leak and then take it from there. Maybe I'll do the ebay rebuilt Denso thing.

If the AC was blowing cold when you bought it, it sounds like there's a leak somewhere instead of a bad compressor.

I had a slow leak in my '91 for 3 years. I converted it over to 134 and hated it and eventually switched over to HC12. There are a lot of acceptible R12 replacements out there nowadays (read this for some good info http://www.allpar.com/eek/ac.html)

My leak ended up being in the lower hose going from the compressor to the firewall (suction hose @~$64 local stealership). Replaced that and no more leak. The HC12 replacement I used has ~6% propane in it. That wories some people but not me. I'm more concerned about the highly flamable gasoline being fed through an electric fuel pump to a hot engine than a little flamable gas dilluted with freon & oil.

But that's just my opinion.

well, just remember that folks didn't have A/C for most of the last 2 million years...! :D

So true! I spoke with a very nice elderly lady, maybe early 70's and working part-time as a receptionist at a local law firm. Told me she grew up in Miami, Florida and they never had AC growing up - normal for them and many other families!

yer right!

they didn't have modern medicine either...

to hell with modern medicine!!! who needs it?

:flipoff2:

If there's enough of a leak that it blows at ambient temp then chances are your compressor is not coming on...so since you stated that it does come on i'd look elsewhere for the problem.

When you set it to max does the blower speed up like it should?

Have you adjusted the temp mix or vent outlet selection? Sometimes it may be a damper issue.

Are any of the lines frozen?

My compressor comes on as it normally does, now ambient air wher once was COLD. Leak, will confirm.
