I ordered a new Denso A/C compressor for an '89 FJ62 from RockAuto. I sure hope it fits, will update once it arrives.

Good luck.

Are you planning to fill with R134 or R12?

I think I have everything ready to go once my compressor arrives other than determining how much oil to add to the new compressor. I will let you know how the replacement goes for me....

I think cruiserparts.net has both versions of the compressors for under 300$..... Just food for thought and there oem

Yeah that's where I ordered mine - although it has been a week and a half and it still hasn't shipped - getting abit frustrated.

That doesn't surprise me... There are plenty of threads around here stating that and they take forever to reply to emails.

I think it was a 3-4 week turn around for a reply once, never again lol

Yeah - but I haven't had any issues getting them on the phone within 5 mins everytime.

They mentioned yesterday that it would go out yesterday or today - fingers crossed. Also said they would send it priority so it would get here by the weekend - if this happens I'm happy, if not - well let's not go there. They told me they don't actually stock the item but rather order it in once your order in placed (at least for this compressor) so it doesn't surprise me it has taken a week and a half already.

Cruiserparts came through and sent out my compressor USPS priority w/ tracking # indicating it will be coming in tomorrow ... now just need to see if I can figure out how much oil to put in.

I can confirm that the new Denso compressor I ordered through RockAuto for a 1989 FJ62 is a direct fit into a 1991 HDJ81. The compressor and clutch are different compared one on one to the factory HDJ81 compressor and clutch, but fit perfectly when combined.

Glad to see you got the right compressor, Douglas.

I got my A/C working now and its nice not to have the windows down on the freeway anymore.

Let me know how it goes with yours.

I realized I forgot to update this. Installed the compressor and charged up the system with 134. Works perfectly, no leaks.

My A/C compressor went on my HDJ81 I did some looking at the local wrecker and found that a 2002 KIA Sportage has the same one. I just had to swap the top plate off my old one. I installed a new dryer and took it to Toyota and had them evacuate the system and charge it with Redteck. It's been blowing ice cold for over 2 months and my center console fridge works great!! All for under $300.00.

Hellajoe
Thanks for sharing re the Kia ac unit. We are heading on a trip to the Grand Canyon but our ac unit was dead.
To the wrecker , changed top plate , recharged and now ice cold.
Love mud.

Great find, man. Thanks for sharing.
My clutch went a few years back And somehow turned the compressor Into a generator sending power towards the ECU. Thank god for fuses. Took a while to figure the problem out.
