The idler pulley is a replaceable part. It can be found in the aftermarket, and may very well have multiple applications. The bracket is the unobtainium, but that's never going to break. PS is the least of your worries if it locks up and tosses the serp belt. The water pump ain't turning either.

Woody's set up is the way to go. His total weight is about 2lbs more than the compressor.

I can tell you from very recent experience, idler pulleys do not like being dunked in water and can not be turned off. I just replaced the lower one on the 80 AC belt. It's not available in the aftermarket, but C-dan has them in stock for $21. ;)

Thanks, I've come to that conclusion as well. Anyone need a Power Tank?

I think I'll keep the compressor and set up an OBA system at some point.

Thanks for all of the input.

Just for future search reference.

Napa Balkamp sells 4 different A/C eliminator brakets: 660-1800, 660-1801, 660-1802, 660-1803. These four seem to fit most of the big 3 manufacturers. They cost about $27.00 retail.

I have the GM eliminator pulley that I purchased from Mr. Goodwrench to carry as a trail spare in case my compressor siezed. It was not at all hard to find
