The idler pulley is a replaceable part. It can be found in the aftermarket, and may very well have multiple applications. The bracket is the unobtainium, but that's never going to break. PS is the least of your worries if it locks up and tosses the serp belt. The water pump ain't turning either.
Woody's set up is the way to go. His total weight is about 2lbs more than the compressor.
I can tell you from very recent experience, idler pulleys do not like being dunked in water and can not be turned off. I just replaced the lower one on the 80 AC belt. It's not available in the aftermarket, but C-dan has them in stock for $21.
