What do I need to do so that my AC will keep me cool while Im idling at a streetlight. I charged it in the spring, and it blows ice-cold, but only while Im in motion. Once I get to a light, it starts blowing progressively warmer air until I shut it off. Once moving, it cools right down.

Thanks, Hodag

Does the idle speed increase when the AC kicks on? If so, to what RPM? I've found that it needs to be 900 RPMs+ for the air to work decent.

If not, either you need to adjust the speed at the carb or your idle-up solenoid is toast.

You need the adjust the AC amp. IIRC it is a small blue knob under the glove box, turn it until it stays on at idle.

What blue knob

Is the blue knob on FJ60? My Fj60 does this same thing. In fact I have two of them that do this. Slow down to stop and they get progressively hotter.

If you are sitting in the passenger seat, right above your left foot is a plastic housing or "tub"; (this is the condensate receiver I think). Anyway mounted on the outside of this plastic housing is a control circuit board that slides in vertically. At the very top of this circuit board is an adjustable blue "knob" or screw. That is it. It might even say "idle adjust" on the circuit board.

I'd take a picture but my wife and kids are wheeling up and down Nauset Beach on Cape Cod in my '60 this week.

VSV

Does anyone know how to check the VSV switch that controls the vacuum going to the idle kick up diaphragm for the A/C? I get A/C when driving and the controller works under the dash, but the darn switch won't kick open to increase the idle....thx.

With the truck running and A/C on, pull the incoming vac hose to the solenoid and plug into the carb diaphragm. Idle should shoot up to the set speed. That means you have vacuum and the carb deal is working.

If that works, check the electrical connection with a multimeter. If good, the solenoid needs attention.

I had mixed results by spraying different crap into the solenoid. Carb cleaner, contact cleaner, WD40, etc. It was frozen up, but now works MOST of the time.

Thanks FJ60Cam....I've done the things you've suggested and narrowed it down to not getting any juice at the electrical connection.....I just can figure out why with everything else is working it won't kick on.
