My first 80's tech post? :)

ABS light has been on, so I finally got around to pulling the codes (code 31).

I was hoping to just find a dirty sensor...but no!

Question #1
Are the front and rear sensors the same? Could I use a used rear sensor up front?

Question #2
Do all FJ80 and FZJ80 use the same sensors?

Here is a crappy picture..

Q#1- Doubt it...

Q#2- FJ80's didn't have ABS and I believe the ABS sensor is sub-series specific. ie 93-94 and 95+ are different.

That's what I thought, but still learning my way around the 80!

So...who has a Front PS sensor to sell me?? :) :)

This will be a job for Dan. I think you need the whole front harness and 2 sensors, since I seem to remember it's one piece.

Did you do a birf service without pulling the ABS sensor first? That's usually how they get broken like that. Good luck, but you are going to spend a few $$.

NTTIAWWT but you might want to also read the recent thread about unhooking your ABS. If you are going to replace- go with CDan.

Then find out what's flying around in the knuckle that broke that sensor.

ditto to what spike said. if there is physical damage to the sensor as it appears in that thing you call a photo then that ain't natural. if that is just crud, try wiping it all off and reinstalling. a dirty sensor will throw a code.

did the abs light go on after a nasty offroad session where you really jarred that wheel?

ouch, i figured that was just part of the gold package ;)

jim it's been a while since I've seen an abs sensor but if you are correct then I will bet his spindle bushing has some "issues" and I agree that an immediate tear down is in order.

I notice Mark logged off...he's probably gone to puke his guts up (he just bought this rig 3 weeks ago.) I am due to drive over to Austin to help him replace his PHH this Thursday, schedule permitting, but I think this just took priority. I think you are right about the spindle issue...something is letting that ABS ring fling, no pun intended.

Correct.

Likely a whole bunch more when the knuckle gets opened up.

Antonio or Tom. They primarily do whsl collision stuff but are able to wade through odd-ball mechanical stuff on 20-year-old low production vehicles if they have to. They would prefer to pitch those calls to me but if I am not there they will field them. They know more about Corollas than I do and that is OK with me....;)

I'm thinking he will need new spindles, a full knuckle rebuild and the ABS parts. That sounds like $800 to me. That's a lot of Cruisercrap sales. I'll buy another bottle opener to help him out. What about the rest of you???

edit-One stainless bottle opener on the way.

Parts for a birf job, two spindles and the ABS harness would be north of a thousand bucks.

i assume a wrecker's yard will sell him a single abs sensor since it looks like it unplugs. that's probably a pretty safe wrecker's part to buy if that part of the truck is unmolested. What years could he use?

the spindle will suck and a used one is not a great solution, but I would not be so sure the other one is bad and at least he will get those nice needle bearings.

Does the factory sensor have a grey disconnect like that on top? I don't remember a provison for disconnecting it from the harness though it may be a year to year diffo and I'm not sure which of my 80s I'm thinking of.

Also, a better focus on the tip would be good. Either a wierd gleam or something's amiss.

Either way, it's pretty clear from the type and location of the grease that his head gasket's toast as well....
