so my wife went to the dealer to have the oil changed... (don't ask...)

Of course, they pulled the usual trick of something else needed to be done. This time it was the front pads... They told her she needed to have them changed because they would not last another 5000 miles. So she said yes. The service form says "found pads at 2mm". (Manual says replace at 1mm btw.)

At least one thing I convinced her to do is to ask for the old parts back. So I look at the pads. Sure enough, they're all either 4 or 5 mm. Which I'm thinking is close to 50% and probably at least 10,000 maybe 20,000 miles...

Anyway, then I look at the new pads. They are blue! That seems odd to me since all the Toy ones I've seen were black IIRC. The Invoice does show them as 04465-60230 which is the correct number per Toydiy.

But I gotta ask: does anybody know if the current Toy pads for the front are blue?

If not, break it to me gently cuz I'm sure to pop a valve if they put some aftermarket stuff on there...

(good thing is that she had the presence of mind to tell them no when they were trying to convince her to do a flush PS fluid exchange with their brand new machine (that they must need to pay for no doubt))

aaargh...

I would call and explain this misleading activity and ask to speak to the manager for a discount on the next service. Wear them out and also explain that you will call Toyota corporate, the BBB and the local TV stations.

The metal backing plates on the new in the box OEM pads sitting on my bench, going in this weekend, are brownish black.

I got nothing for this other than I would want my dealership to be my ally, not an adversary.

I second that brownish dark grey color. i just changed mine (front and rear) couple weeks ago. I never recall seeing any blue pads.

grrr.... even the side of the pad itself is blue, not just the backing plate....

supposedly these are 60230, which is the p/n for the later 100s (03+). Could be that the earlier ones (different numbers) are different colors?

the 80 guys also mentioned brown but the 100 pads they use are the early type I think.

TM, what's the p/n on yours if it's not too much trouble?

never seen toyota pads other then the brownish black whatever color. Well maybe aside from TRDs.

Damn, my wife knows enough to have it towed home even if it breaks down in the dealer parking lot. She worked at GM, her dad had a big repair center, she knows cars and how the system works. You need to check torques on the drain plug and lug nuts, then sit her down for a talk.

Blue backing plate and blue sides? Sounds like a NAPA part... Def not Toyota.

Even the Hawks I just got are black. EBC pads are colored, based on quality. Green Stuff would have been the appropriate pad for the 100.

Now to just find the time to install.....

Don't the OEM pads have the part number printed on the side of the brake material? None of the pads on any of mine have ever been a different color than the blackish/brown from the dealer.

Don't bother writing Toyota a letter or trying to call them. It is a waste of time. They didn't even show any concern when I told them I went to one of their Toyota dealers and because they didn't have the Land Crusier for sale that I went to look at they tried talking me into a new Jeep Grand Cherokee. Our dealer is Toyota, Lexus, Scion, BMW, Jeep, and Kia. They used to also be Audi and VW. All under the same roof until real recently.

Toyota builds the best vehicles for the money in the world. But they have some of the crappiest dealers and service centers! And people take it from them because they like their Toyotas.

Terrible business model if you ask me, they need to adopt the Lexus plan and focus on Customer Service. I try never to use the dealership just because of this nonsense.

New development. According to Beno, the pads for the later models are indeed Blue. That's the 60230 ones, made by Sumitomo.

I'm surprised. Never seen any blue ones before. Wonder if that's a recent change.

So maybe we were only scammed once (the need for replacement). Well, of course, she also paid the super duper MSRP+ price... :frown:

Confirmation - Original pads on my '07 are blue .

Maybo moot now, but the 04465-60220 (98-03?) are brownish black. Have fresh pair from CDan that's been laying around since the front ones have not yet worn out. Number on the actual pad is 477-J10.

Maybe helps someone later down the road browsing the forums.

A bit late but as stated above they are blue, have changed a couple or more on my 03, have 1 spare set, blue.
EDIT: And made in Japan

I installed my driver's side brakes and wheel bearings today. Got to the end with new OEM rotors (43512-60171) installed and new pads (04465-60220), which are green (as a contribution to this old thread) ;)
. I have pushed until the caliper pistons are as flat as possible and can't get the caliper back on the rotors. Looks like I'm about a 1/2" too short in the gap between the pads.

I double checked part#s and my rotors/pads are correct so this is supposed to work. I tried bleeding the line a little. Any wisdom is greatly appreciated!

Thanks everyone!!

1/2"? That's a huge miss! Do you have the other side still together to compare what it should look like? Or some photos on MUD? Something is not in the right place for it to miss that much. Is there a lot of corrosion in the pad clips or springs? I could seen having to wiggle a bit, but not a 1/2".
