Need some help here folks. I have a 2006 LX470 (141k miles) that has no reverse, no 3rd gear, slipping 4th gear, and no 5th. 1st to 2nd shifts butter smooth and holds strong. Have searched and can’t find any similar failures or issues with the A750F transmissions.
The background (since it might be relevant): one week ago while attempting to turn around on a snow covered road, my 16 yr old son managed to get pulled into the snow filled shoulder and buried the rig up to the axles in heavy, dense snow. So dad to the rescue with the LX450. In attempting to drive the 470 out of the drift I realized there was no reverse. After winching for a few minutes, managed to get the 470 extracted, but only by moving forward. Once free and on the road home realized that we only had the bottom two gears and sometimes 4th. A short interrogation after arriving home indicated that in the process of burying the truck, there were the typical shifts between D and R, And after 3 or 4 cycles, reverse was suddenly gone. No bangs, pops, lurches, or grinding. Reverse just gone.
What I’ve done:
1) drained the fluid - dark, dirty, not burnt (based upon smell). Full disclosure: have had WS fluid on hand since 90k miles but hadn’t yet gotten around to changing it.
2) dropped pan - “normal” residue in pan. All magnets clean. Zero debris, zero metal/ shavings.
3) replaced all (3qty) shift solenoids with new OEM.
4) removed and cleaned all (4qty) brake/clutch solenoids. Verified operation of all using 12V source.
5) replaced fluid and verified level (trans to temp, engine at idle, remove level check plug, etc.)
Results of above: same behavior (no R,3,4,5)
Have since taken it to the local Toyota dealer, and to another import dealer for a second opinion. Response was the same at both, “You need a new transmission.” Neither was able to able to provide a diagnosis beyond that.
Does anyone have experience with these transmissions?
Do the symptoms above really indicate a full transmission replacement?
No doubt the transmission has failed, but given the lack of debris in the pan, the solid performance in 1st and 2nd gears, and the apparent durability of these transmissions, I wonder if I might be dealing with a valve body or electrical issue.
Any thoughts, guidance, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
