I know this is a long shot however I have to ask.

I need a partner or two to go in on a second vehicle. I want to drive a manual fun car like once or twice a week. Quick and fun. You fix whatever you break, We share tires and maintenance and upgrades. Nothing crazy. Just fun, quick, reliable, trackable, etc. If I buy this by myself it will sit 26 days a month. Cars are to be driven. I think $2500 each to start. We get a $5k car and go from there.

Possible Candidates
944
CRX
GTI
BMW M cars - e36
BMW 3 series
Celica All Trac
WRX

I found this today.

1988 BMW 325i m52 swap. Mine.| Cars For Sale forum | - this looks fun

This could also be the start of the race team.

Any all feedback welcome.

This could be cool. I did this in high school with my neighbor. We bought a 944. I still think it would be cool to have one... that ran. We bought a $200 924, it went from not cranking or starting to cranking and not starting, after messing with it for about 6 months we sold it for tree fidy. I wish I had it now because I’m sure I could figure it out. At the time my dads shop had all kinds of customers with different Porsche models, he refused to help us with it. I’m sure he or one of his mechanics knew what was going on, I think he didn’t want us driving it because he knew what kind of trouble we’d get in. At any rate, good luck on your fun car adventure

After owning, driving, and racing many cars on the list, the GTI would be my choice. Bigger rear sway and higher boosted engine, and you will be amazed by the performance

Only one real choice there, two are FWD and therefore s*** , some are kraut Kars and will be unreliable and spendy, the wrx will be the nicest sounding and fairly decent to make power but unless there is an STI badge also that trans will scatter faster than roaches when you turn on the light if you launch it too hard. ;)

The yota is king here and really if you want a newer stronger trans and engine they are sub/2k for the combo all day long, but the stock ones can still make reliable power up to 550/HP.

They do have some drawbacks though. There arrived some parts, especially on the first gens that are all track specific and hard to find (body parts, rear suspension parts and mounts) the first heads have lost most aftearket support. Best thing is to swap on a head from a MR2.

Mine will be up for sale soon sadly as life has deemed it a non-needed car.

We had a 944 in highschool also, had an overheating problem. Was going to v8 swap it for a track car but we fixed the issue and was offered too much to turn down. I think we bought it for $400 and sold for 2k

Well, I have a candidate car if you’re interested.

The quick and dirty is it’s a S52 swapped 328i, aka 332i aka Faux3. Also has the corresponding M3 rear 3.15 LSD. Obviously a ZF 5 spd. About 223k on the chassis and tranny, 120k on motor and rear.

I can go on for awhile but gist of it is Eibach springs, Bilstein shocks. Just about every chassis bushing has been replaced with polys. Brakes upgraded to larger units from an E46. Cooling system replaced in the last 30k miles, larger Z3M radiator and metal impeller water pump.

Plenty more, most of the replacement parts done in last 3 years or 30k miles. Just did 700+ miles in it the other week out to the Tail of the Dragon. It’s my 2nd daily and play car but selling would afford me another big CO/UT trip in the Cruiser next year. I’d want slightly more than your $5k number but not terribly more. Anyway, PM me if you would like to know more.

Thank you for all the input.

I like the 3 series that @JohnJB posted. I would like to daily drive this on nice days.

Also, the minimum commit is not $2500. If you are interested you get a % of the car based on dollars based on days per month. And you would have access to my 15 year old 100 series. Maybe you want to get better at driving a manual. Maybe you want a car you can take to track days at VIR. Maybe you want to drive something different without breaking the bank.

I know car share has been around for sometime. The end goal is to have a fleet of fun stuff and come and get what you want to drive that week. Nothing crazy and not crazy money.

The previous generation will freak at sharing however I am way beyond that, it is a tool to be enjoyed. If you wreck, scratch it, blow it up, then fix it and move on.

I would like to roll in paddle boards, kayaks and a small boat into this fleet as well. Gear sitting drives me nuts. Gear is to be enjoyed. If you wear it out, hit craig's and replace.

Happy Friday!

This looks well sorted. Does it have functional AC? What is the weight and how much HP? I will send a PM about pricing and timing. Thank you.

This is a neat concept however I would not be an ideal candidate. I am rough on cars and anything that makes power makes me want to push it even harder. The Cruiser and Tundra make me a safer driver because they are so slow. The GTI however needs a new clutch to hold all the power from the Unitronic tune so it has to be babied on the backroads to work.

Where would we store it? OK to take to VIR and run it around up there?

My FIL and I were trying to figure out a way to get into something that goes fast and stays flat around curves. This might be the ticket. I'm short on storage space, but can handle any mechanical/fab needs.

I have a spot to keep it. It is not covered.
Yes - This is mostly for VIR! We would have a set of road wheels and tires and track wheels and tires. And maybe a trailer at some point. This is a 10 to 15 year+ partnership/agreement. When we sell in 10 to 15 years everyone gets their percentage of their money back.

I like the BMW.

Personally, I would not say rough for myself, I would say I use vehicles as they were intended to be used. I am looking for others that do the same. This is why I daily drive a 100 because it is slow.
The reason for partners is the car would sit 20 to 25 days a month and that drives me crazy.
I would like the car some Sunday's and some Monday's. And then to VIR. The rest of the days it will sit.
Or we could split weeks at a time to make it easier.

Let's meet to discuss more. You available Sunday for lunch maybe?
I am Oriental this weekend fishing. I work at Avalara and I am in Durham most days.

Add to your list a second gen MR2 can be had for cheap. Handle well, great engine base, etc.

If wanting a subie skip the wrx get a 90s 2 door impreza for $600 source an sti motor and trans and you will still be under 5k with a killer combo.
