As temperatures reach record highs my A/C on my 97-80 is not working as it should. Several weeks ago I noticed pools of antifreeze on the front passenger floor. Replaced heater core. Now the A/C does not stay cold. It starts cold, but after a littile driving blows hot air. Please point me in the right direction. Thanks

Search under overheating and A/C or some configuration. There are a number of things that could be going wrong:

1. not enough coolant.
2. compressor not working.
3. needs new fan clutch.
4. overheating of the engine due to a number of things.

You haven't given enough information for a diagnosis. Start by searching and reading threads on this, and then, if you have more questions, post back.

Good luck. Not having AC sucks.

Are you sure that all the little flappers that direct air got hooked up, hooked up correctly, and are functional?

OK. It all started (I think) when it was running hot and shutdown in busy mid-afternoon traffic. Immediately prior to shutting down I was getting lots of spark-knocking. After sitting a while in traffic I re-started her and drove ~0.2 miles and towed it to the house. At that point I noticed the temp guage was hot, hot. Upon inspection noticed radiator cap had a small crack in seal and after repalcing it she seemed to run fine without any spark knock. At the same time, determined to get things right I decided to fix the damn check engine light and repalced exhaust gas sensor. I previousy replaced recirculator. Light went out for maybe 4 hours and then came back on. At the time I replaced Rad cap, flushed coolant and changed. Now, A/C seems to work fine until it craps out.........day by day, hour by hour. Once it craps out it does not cool again until parked for a while. It was freakin 105 today and I am a fat boy who sweats like at 75 degrees. Please help.

Did you search? This is a very common problem? Are you sure your engine is not still running hot?

Heater Valve

I just bought a cruiser and live in Arizona. The guy I bought mine from showed me a small valve on the firewall that needs to be shut all the way so the heater is not fighting the air conditioner. On mine this valve did not shut completely with the control cable connected. He instructed me to pull the cable free and manually close the valve in the summer. The valve is inside the engine compartment near the middle of the firewall. You might check that the cable moves when you change from heat to air conditioning. My wife has a Celica which would blow not quite cold air for months after a charge. I had to add some dye and found the leak under the dash (pinhole in the evaporator) with a black light.

Good Luck
