I took the LC out for a fall foliage trip and found some 4wd roads to play around on.

The problem was that I couldn't get my rear diff to consistently lock in. The owners manual was exceptionally clear so I have the following questions.

Will it only lock if you are going below 5 mph?

Will it only lock if you are in 4 low?

Thanks,

Adam R.

Adam,
You should lock it 5mph or less. And unless you have done the 7-pin mod you will only be able to lock the e-locker in 4L. Be sure you are NOT on pavement when locking or using the locker; it also helps to lock/unlock when the the rig is being turned slightly...so that each rear wheel travels a slightly different distance.

I thought the 7pin mod allowed you to control the center dif lock (it locked automatically with 4low).

Dean,
You are correct...my error. I was thinking about the 4H e-locker mod.

Sorry for the confusion!

I thought that the center diff lock engaging only on low was a 80 series thing, that in the 100, you can turn the CDL on-off at will? I used 4wd low a few weeks back and don't recall the CDL automatically engaging; I know I deliberately left it off since it wasn't needed in the situation.

Unless you have done the 7-pin mod the 100 (at least the '98 and '99 MY) the CDL can only be engaged when in 4L.

Correct me if I’m wrong. The way the center diff lock works (stock configuration) is 4 hi if you press the button & it automatically engages with 4low.
With the 7 pin mod, the only thing that changes is the automatic engagement of the center lock in 4low. You have to push the button to engage in 4low with the 7 pin mod.

I don't remember how mine was before the 7-pin. But post 7-pin mod the CDL is independent of 4L and/or 4H. I can run the CDL in 4L or 4H and with or without rear (or front) locker being activated.

OK, looks like I might need to do the 7-pin mod next time I replace the cabin air filters. I wonder if the reason why the CDL only engages in 4wd low is so some soccer mom doesn't inadvertently hit the button and drive around town, destroying the drive train?

Probably...but it worked really, really well for me (CDL locked in 4H) last year while coming back from a hunt. The temps had warmed up considerably and turned the snow/frozen ground into a slog by the time I got back to the truck and wanted to leave. It was tenuous but I made it out to the credit of CDL locked in 4H.

CDL can be locked in 4H with a push of the button...no mods required.....at least on my '98 anyway..........

I looked at my 03 owner's manual and it says the CDL can be engaged both in high or low. The difference is in low, the VSC or whatever is disabled. I cross-checked the FSM electrical manual and the CDL relay shows no pin 7. So it seems that Toyota has done away w/ only enabling the CDL in 4wd low for the '03+ LX's (and probably LC's) .

In my '01, I can lock or unlock the cdl in both Hi and Lo. Also, I can put it in Lo and it doesn't engage the cdl; you still have to hit the button. It may be different for 98-99 since they had lockers instead of ATRAC.
