My LC suddenly stopped while in drive on a hill on my driveway, started making this awful scraping noise. (See Video) Tried reverse, same thing. Put it in Park, it rolled. Put the H/L selector in L and it moved. Put it back in H, same like before. Kept it in H and pushed the 4WD drive button on the dash; the truck moved! Forward, Reverse, and Park all functioned.

As seen in the video, the front driveshaft is spinning. This video is with the car in Drive. (Brake set)

One more symptom: it seems like the front wheels aren't being driven, even in 4WD; the rear wheels spin easily on the gravel.

1) How do I fix it? 2) How harmful is it to drive like this? (In 4WD)

Best case, one of the c-clips has popped off the end of the CV, you can check by removing the dust caps and seeing if it's in place. Worst case, you've blown your front diff. Likely the first since it sounds like you weren't doing anything that would be stressing the front diff.

The button you're pressing isn't a 4wd button, it's the center differential lock button. You can drive with it pressed and in low range because it's sending power equally front and rear. Your truck is full time 4wd. I'd suggest reading through your owner's manual to understand the drive system.

I would not drive it like that, even with the CDL engaged, you'll risk further damage to your hub.

With the same setup in your video of the driveshaft spinning, look at each cv axle. If either one is spinning, the outer splines on that shaft are stripped (you're lucky, a relatively easy fix). If neither one is spinning you have a blown dront diff. (Bad news, a more complicated and more expensive fix)
If it is just a cv axle spinning, you just need to replace that cv axle and the drive flange on that hub and you will be back in business.
On a side note, if one axle is worn to the point where the splines stripped, I would suspect the other axle and drive flange to be about ready for replacement as well.
Good luck, hope it's only an axle.

Good advice above. Most likely front CV axles and flanges need to be replaced. If it does end up being the front diff, I have a used 4.3 front ring and pinion you can have for free; just pay for shipping.

Got it now. Thank you.

Looks like it was the left side CV axle/hub flange splines, as you suggested.

Any idea what it should cost to have someone put these in?

Also do you have any recommended sources for these parts? CV axles, wheel flanges, etc? I want to do both sides, ...if I can afford it!

I get all my parts from toyotapartsdeal.com.
Enter your vin number and search for front drive shaft and drive flange.
And, you might want to change the title in your youtube vid from land ROVER to land CRUISER!
