98 LC needs engine replaced

So would same hold true for all 2UZ engines. I mean are they all made in Japan and shipped to their installation locations?
 
Figured I should chime in seeing as how this thread is full of all sorts of offensive statements, lol.

First off to all the Big 3 haters, I have a 99 F-350 7.3 power stroke with 365k miles and it runs fine. It used to be my DD until I bought a second LC.

My "new" DD is a 2000 LC with 311k miles on it now. I bought it used with 307k from an owner who was less than stellar at maintenance. I brought it home and gave it a tune up with new plugs, fuel filter, air filter, oil change, throttle body cleaning, and fixed the leaking exhaust manifolds. So far I am yet to have any real mechanical issues with it.

The wifes DD is the "low mileage" 2000 LC with 215k that runs trouble free.

And just because Im feeling triggered by the assumption that high mileage LC's are few and far between my parts rig has 277k on it. I only drive it around the neighborhood when I need to move it in and out of the shop but it fires right up like a champ, no leaks, or squeaks. With any luck it might gain a new life here shortly and be removed from "parts truck" status.

It is true that engines do wear out and eventually need to be rebuilt or replaced, but you can increase the longevity by simple routine maintenance and driving habits.

Anyways, good luck with the possible new truck. Hopefully the seller is incorrect about valve damage and you can pick up a sweet deal! Keep us posted!

If the engine code is the same 90% of the parts should be identical. the 5vzfe on 4runner, tacoma, Tundra, Hiace, Prado all are same except the location of the engine oil cooler/filter, oil pan, oil pump tube and few electronics at the throttle body. Many buying JDM 5vzfe swap the locations of oil cooler and oil filter fairly easily.
 
Question I have is where did components for long block of 2UZ come from and where were they assembled?

I resurrected this old thread form 2010, not for OP or if rebuilding is needed in the series 100. We've now seen 2UZ-fe with 200K, 300k or even 500k miles, and even one with 1 million miles in 5 years on a Tundra. We now know this engine is one of the most durable long life engines ever built.

My interest is on difference in the 2UZ-fe & 2UZ-fe VVT short block and heads, and between USA & Japanese made models. Toyota/Lexus has many models that use this engine that were made in Japan; Series 100, 4Runner and GX470, and other models that were made in USA Tundra & Sequoia.

I hear things like:
Some say connecting Rods of Japan made are forged, whereas USA made are not.
Some same the TRD breather package is no longer available because of weak rods in USA made 2UZ, but TRD breather not available for any 2UZ any longer.
Some say Japan made are better, but Tundra is only document at 1 million mile with a 2UZ.
Some same the USA develop piston slap, but I've heard in series 100.

Are these urban legend are is there some truth here.
 
I am going to throw my story up on here for anyone who is looking to do a 2uz-fe swap in a LC100.

In short, I hydrolocked my 2004 lc100; and the original engine had 218K miles on it, absolutely no problems during the life of the car (bought from parents who bought it brand new, I actually grew up in it). Was going to do a rebuilt, however I found out I completely snapped a rod and bent another, causing internal damage. As a result I'd have to get a new block. With the option of a rebuild gone,I sourced a used 2uz-fe from a 2002 Tundra from NE USA that was a back-end total with 102K miles (~1900 shipped including tax). I had the stealership drop it for me as no shop would take on the liability in my area, and to their credit they did a great job. We replaced the water pump, timing belt, spark plugs, and serpentine belt on the used engine I dropped as well. If you are doing the same I'd recommend that because you're going to be right there with the engine out. You have to replace the oil pan with the original from the LC100 as its a different shape, and the exhaust manifold must also be transferred from the LC100 also due to its shape.

Honestly I can tell you the engine seems like it has more "muscle" to it, but that could be purely due to the difference in engine age. I haven't noticed any other difference. I did some research, and what others have said regarding location of manufacturing is true; LC 2uz-fe's were made in Japan, and Tundra 2uz-fe's were made in the US; I was told Texas by friends who work for Toyota as MEs.

Now for the part I was concerned with: reliability and quality differences between the two. I will be honest and admit I hold a bias that Japanese manufacturing is tighter and spec ranges are smaller than here on the states, whether right or wrong. In my conversations with aforementioned people who are ME's in Toyota, my concerns were put to rest enough for me to continue with the drop. They all were adamant that quality specs are not different between the two engines, and none of them had reservations with dropping it and all encouraged it. So far I am glad I did. The car drives awesome, feels just like the original motor with more "umff" and have yet to have any issues. I wanted to throw my story up here in case anyone else is considering it as well. Hope it helps someone, feel free to reach out with questions if you're in a similar spot!

But you dorks, Toyotas due need to be rebuilt if you drive them.
Nothing lasts forever and money is not free last time I checked.

My first toyota was a 93 xcab 167k sold it
Second was 1985 4runner 185k sold it
97 fzj 80 with 245K in driveway for sale $3900
and now a 2000 uzj100

how many 300k mile 100s are out there right now anyway?
probably not very many.

I purchased the 100 mainly because it costs a ton of money to RnR my engine on my 80 and I dont have the time and knowledge to rebuild the 4.5 liter.

When i started getting price quotes for the 80 i was saddened to hear that the costs would in reality be at minimum $7k for a rebuild. I looked for a good used motor, have you ever tried to find used landcruiser parts, not that easy and i live really close to a bunch of wrecking yards.

So spending at min $ 7000 does not make sense to me when i just purchased a 2000 with 120k for $12k.

So i was hoping that in 5-10 years when i will hopefully have over 250k miles on my new to me cruiser that a good used engine option is available, in the event my motor cant make it past 300k miles.

Enough of my rant.

This post aged poorly.
