I wore my hearing aids today and that allowed me to hear this rattling sound clearly, from the engine, when I started the pickup cold (55-60*F ambient)

1998 JDM import Hilux with 5L (model) diesel. 85K miles, 135K km. Oil level/pressure is good. Performance is fine.

After about 5 minutes of light load driving the rattling sound mostly went away. I did hear again in town - to a lesser degree - when I merged into traffic with heavy acceleration in first gear.

I am hoping this is normal "they all do that" 'feature' of the indirect injection engine.

Is it? Or is it something I should be concerned about?

TIA

With a 4 cylinder indirect injection diesel just about everything on the car will rattle, could you be a bit more descriptive, or post a video with sound?

I've owned four 3L trucks, and every single one sounded like a swarm of pissed off ball peen hammers on a cold day. They all run great. The L series is prone to being very noisy until it gets up to temp. If oil pressure is good and you aren't knocking, everything is totally fine.

You could check to see if there is a loose bolt or bracket. Probably just how it sounds though. :D

There is one thing I should note... if the timing is a little off (I've seen this when someone inexperienced did a belt job, they were off maybe one or two teeth on the cam gear) the truck will still run but it gets VERY loud. Only seen this once. No damage occurred. Pulled the slack back out of the belt and re-timed to the notches.

You are totally fine. Drive the s*** out of it and don't worry!
thanks.
It is hard for me being half deaf anymore; I drove it yesterday with my hearing aids in most of the day because I was going to a dr. appt and other interactions with people. Then on the way home took the aids out and it was like aiding a foot of sound deadening material; I could hear any clattering/etc. at all.

Sounds totally normal to me. I can hear a light, irregular click like a dry bearing on an external belt tensioners, but it could be just a trick of the microphone or some rattle. Nothing I would worry about.
