98 Fuel tank replacement

My fuel tank is leaking when it's over halfway full, and looks very crusty. Are there any pitfalls to using an aftermarket tank off of ebay, specifically this one?

I hate not using OEM parts, but toyota wants $1000 for one. That's pretty pricey, so hoping this is a viable alternative.

Also, are the cushions on the top reusable/necessary?

you say it looks crusty? is that the skid plate looking bad or the tank itself?
can you see the leak area?
are you sure it doesn't have to do with the fill tube?

that price on ebay seems very cheap but it could be just fine.

if your tank is that bad, the skid plate and straps may also need attention along with the fill tube.

This. If you still have a skid plate under the gas tank that’s not rusted to pieces, then it’s unlikely the tank itself is leaking and very probable that the fill tube between the tank and cap has a leak.

I sourced an OE take off fuel tank and skid plate in pretty damn clean condition for $250 shipped via car-part.com, that’s a good source if you haven’t tried looking. Aside from what has already been mentioned with the filler tube, I would also take a good look at your fuel lines before dropping your tank. When I went to start the replacement of my tank/skid, I found my fuel lines to be equally crusty. I stopped the install right there. No sense in dropping and replacing the tank to do it again for fuel lines. I was able to get all 3 fuel lines (00 LC) and 2 gaskets that are needed for the tank replacement for $146 through Toyota.
