I just bought this truck a few weeks ago. Love it and happy to be part of the community of LC owners!! No issues from the start, but I immediately added some Seafoam to the engine oil in preparation for an oil change. Not suggesting causality here at all (just want to give as much info as possible), but shortly after the Seafoam I threw a P401 while cruising at highway speed. Reset code twice and it returned twice under similar conditions. Read TONS about EGR and the EGR delete on the forum (thanks!) and not really wanting to fool with diagnosing several components for a system that could be described as somewhat "optional", I gave the EGR delete a try. Capped both vac ports on TB, jumped ECU side of EGR temp sensor with 10k ohm resistor, fashioned and installed aluminum block plate between manifold and EGR valve. Left all EGR gear in place. Test drove immediately after and noticed what I would describe as an engine RPM related clicking noise from engine when under load. No new nose at idle or cruising. It was present again this morning during a longer drive. I really don't have enough experience to definitively identify it. My description might suggest detonation and it may very well be, but for some reason I'm not sure it is. It's seems too "sharp" sounding and consistent from my limited experience with pinging.

Has anyone else experienced this and resolved it? I assume the ECU is constantly monitoring engine conditions (like the new lack of exhaust gas in the mix) and making corresponding adjustments so there would be no reason to "reset" it some how, right? I want to keep this beast running in tip-top form for a looooong time so unless there's a reliable fix I will likely re-install EGR and diagnose/repair "properly". Thanks in advance for feedback and for helping to create such a useful resource.

I can't say for sure what caused the code. It could have been a coincidence.

My first thought is to put the EGR back to stock and trouble shoot the system according to the FSM. Also check all the EGR related vacuum lines.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Egr adds exhaust gas to the fuel/air mix to reduce combustion chamber temps reducing exhaust pollutants out the tail pipe. Higher combustion temp due to no exhaust gas recirculating will result in pinging. Why not fix the egr system? It ultimately benefits us all
