Oh, forgot earlier to say that I could feel the
Does it generally occur after a long drive in hot weather?
Next time it happens open the gas cap or one of the hoses
going to the vapor canister to see if the noise stops.
Ah-so! I'll try this. Thank you, sir!

When the A/C is turned off, the high and low sides equalize, normal. Sometimes, on some systems, this makes noise.
I've only heard the weird sounds after running the A/C on very hot days. I've actually now also felt vibrations through the fender when trying to pin point the source of the sounds. Apparently the compressor was replaced just prior to when I bought the truck a couple months ago. I immediately had the whole motor out for new seals, hoses, belts, hg and goodness. I keep coming back to A/C
Do you think the orifice valve could be partially clogged and takes a while to equalize ?
Hmm...the orifice valve _could_ be a consideration, especially since the PO very recently replaced the compressor. (Not-so-fond memories of my '94 Suburban that had all kinds of metal shavings and crap in the lines from me letting things go too long when the original compressor died.) I actually asked my Toyota mechanic* if he could see anything funky relating to the AC when he pulled the motor, but he said, no. The truck cools quite well at this time, but it's definitely something I'll keep in mind. Appreciate the input!

* I don't have enough time/tools/knowledge to do serious motor work. #someday

Which fender?

I agree with others that it's very possibly air pressure equalizing, likely vacuum or fuel tank vent related.

If you turn on the heater to open the heater valve, does it stop immediately?
If you turn on the rear heater, does it stop immediately?
Have you topped off the coolant overflow recently?
It could be steam in the heater hoses equalizing past a worn out heater valve.

You could embrace it and just blast this while shutting down the vehicle: :skull:

Or if you want to go with the whale theme instead:

Kinda weird that two completely different Michael Jackson songs work for this.

Kinda weird that you know about or took the time to track down and post two different Michael Jackson songs that work for this......:rofl::rofl:

It's quite a coincidence that you posted this, as a couple weeks ago I heard the exact same thing while stuck in traffic at the end of a 3 hour drive on a hot day. The truck remained running with the AC on for the 10 minutes or so it occurred. I haven't heard it since.

At the time the sound was accompanied by the smell of gas, which led me to believe it had something to do with the charcoal canister or gas tank as others have mentioned. I have a relatively new aftermarket canister in mine, so I started thinking I should replace my gas cap to see if that helps.

In any event, best of luck figuring it out!

I did a forum search for 'haunted whale sounds' because I've also been having haunted whale sounds. It's only now started in LA summer hot weather. I have a 94 that I use as my DD, on a pretty easy and short commute, and I notice this the most when I pull in the driveway at the end of the day. I suspect its AC related partially because today I noticed a little water leaking from the front under the engine bay, cool to the touch and declining in the speed of its drip as if pressure was bleeding off from somewhere.
The AC blows cold always but sometimes I notice a vibration that sounds like high idle but not from the engine that periodically starts when the vehicle is sitting at a traffic stop. It runs a little cycle like this then the sounds stops and the engine is quieter again. It's just been going on for a week or so. Did yours ever end up getting resolved?

Water (condension from the AC evaporator) drips out of a drain tube located on the right lower firewall. That is normal when the AC is running.
