Subscribed. Hang in there! You are doing a good job. I'm in the same boat needing a motor and mine has a thrown rod, so I'm wondering if I'm going to have the same head issues. I like the way you found cheap fixes on stuff.

Posted this in another thread, but a couple of months ago I had the engine in my '95 completely rebuilt. Paid someone to do it for me, as my time is pretty tight right now. Cost me ~ $3k by the time it was all said and done, but it ran GREAT. For 6 weeks. Then my son put the truck into a tree. I thought that the engine may still be good, but the impact drove it back a few inches into the firewall. Pretty sure that's bad.

Enjoyed reading about your restoration . . . but the headaches spook me. Trying to decide on going the lazy path and purchasing a fully restored Cruiser to replace mine, or finding a project. I like working on them, as long as I don't hit too many snags. And I think that's some wishful thinking.

Have you possibly considered an engine from a more recent model - such as the 2006?

It's been a good 5 months since I've posted and updated my status. Over the course of the last five months I've completed my engine swap. Slowly but surely I finally got it done. The crazy part...it turned over the first time and ran great. So far no leaks or engine codes.

I do have a terrible whine and a little smoke. I'm not worried about the smoke I figure it's spilled oil/tranny fluid burning off.

But the whine has me concerned. I thought it was the PS box. It may be. Once I bled it properly and got the fluids to the right level I thought it would solve it but no luck. Thoughts?
I'll post a video so you can hear it.

In the mean time I bought a great Tacoma so the cruiser got bumped to a trail rig rather than a daily driver. I'm pretty excited about that.

Update: solved the whine. Of all things it was the alternator. I pulled it in an effort to make pulling the PS pump easier. While it was out I thought I'd have it checked. Turns out when I hand spun it I immediately knew there was a problem. I have a spare from the original engine. I had them both tested and indeed that one was trashed.

In the mean time, I pulled the PS pump still thinking that was the problem. On inspection everything looked fine. Except one HUGE problem. Look at my foamy oil.

I've been checking the oil since starting the engine and occasionally it looked foamy. So having recently been through this I started investigating. I've got the foam under the oil fill cap, on the dip stick, and now on the PS pump. I did a compression check and all the cylinders have 120 psi dry. My coolant is new and looks clear. I haven't noticed any mixed looking fluid.

So on one hand I want to pull my hair out...I can't believe it. Did I really just swap out the engine for another one with a blown HG? I was told it was "a good running engine" from the fellow MUD member who was "just trying to help me out."

(If it turns out this engine indeed has a blown HG, I'm going to fully disclose all the details related to the purchase of the engine and the member who sold it to me).

In the mean time, I'm going to flush the engine with diesel and get some fresh oil in it.

What am I missing here? Is there anything else it could be?

I'm starting to think I have the worst cruiser luck known to man.

I recognize the mistake I made early on. It was thinking I could buy one on the cheap and that it was going to be great. No so.

In the mean time I've learned a ton. So I've paid some "stupid tax". Oh well.
