Howdy all. Can someone please post the link to the detailed 96 gauge cluster removal thread that it on here? I had it open the other day, but cannot find it.

Thanks,
Ron

Download the service manual from the Resources section and you have it when you need it.

Pay attention to the circled letters beside the connection points. They correspond to the fastener chart on page BO-75.

Thanks Malleus. I have the repair manual. The thread I am referring to had detailed pictures showing exactly where the tabs are on the upper shroud. That is the one I am looking for.

Thanks,
Ron

You do not have to drop the steering column, but it does help. A lot.

You do have to remove the steering column cover. There are five screws; the two closest to you are the connection between the upper and lower halves. The other three are machine threaded screws that attach the lower half to the column. Remove the two connecting the halves first, then the three machine screws, then tilt the column down and remove the cover halves. You can do it the other way, but you'll wish you hadn't.

The combination meter will swing out, with the column tilted down, from the right. You will have to push it all the way to the left first, to remove the four connectors from the rear. Three are connected at the top, one on the right (the largest) and two on the left, near the corner. The transmission position indicator has its own connector, in the middle of the meter. None of them should be difficult to remove.

I find it easiest to depress the locking tab, in the middle of the connector housing, with my left middle finger and pull the connector housing with my right hand, slid behind the meter. There's not a lot orf room back there, but there is enough. Of course, none of this is necessary if you drop the column on the floor, but you have to remove the seat first.

It's in the illustration in the manual:

The following searches may help. You can drop these into Google and then change the results from "All" to "Images" and you may be able to recognize an image from the thread you are looking for:

80 series cluster removal site:forum.ih8mud.com
80 series instrument removal site:forum.ih8mud.com
80 speedo remove site:forum.ih8mud.com
May have to play around with changing/adding/removing keywords like "cluster", "instrument", "gauge", "dash", "remove", "tabs", "removal", "80", "series", etc.

Also do a search on YouTube. I seem to recall at least one helpful video I found easily.

Don't try to skip this step. You can get the cluster out without removing the clamshell, but you'll scratch the crap out of it.
