I have had this issue for a couple of years now and while it only happened originally at less than 10 degrees now it seems to be happening anywhere 40 or below. The car makes a grinding noise when trying to turn over. It then starts up everytime on the 2nd try. This only happens when the car is cold and it is cold out. This has been going on for 5 years and 50k miles now.

I have tried asking a mechanic but they have been unable to replicate it. It happens pretty much every morning now. Has the solenoid failed? flywheel? I am worried with the increased frequency it might start damaging something more.

Here is a video:

Thanks!

Sounds to me like the starter is slipping then finally cranks?, not sure, need to diagnose it further.

Do you have an ignitor pack in that truck? Coil needs to ground thru holddown bolts if it has one. Can cause starter probs in LC's

Could be a cold solder joint problem on the ICS computer? check the ground contact group behind dash, should be a cluster of 4-5 grounds back there. Is your cold air intake in front of windshield plugged? There are drains in there, and if plugged, can allow water to build up, and dump water back into interior.

That would make sense on why it would only happen when the car is cold as the solder is probably contracted. Do you have a picture or diagram of what I am looking for? My googling hasn't turned much up.
